Old T-mobile account

I had a contract with T-mobile which I cancelled in 2007. Haven't heard anything else from them since and had forgotten I was ever with them until this weekend when I got a letter from a debt collection agency threatening me with court action for £60.99 I apparently owe T-mobile.

Needless to say, I was a bit miffed that this was the first I had heard about it so I emailed the agency and T-mobile customer services explaining the situation and asking them to hold off on any action until I had received written confirmation of what the charges were for etc.

After a few emails back and forth to T-mobile I checked my email this morning and found one from them saying:

“Thanks for your further email, confirming the account details to help you with the bill you've received for the amount of £60.99.

I know it can cause quite a shock to receive a bill after paying the outstanding amount completely. I'll surely look into this for you.

After checking your account, I'd like to advise you that reason for receiving another bill after paying the bill in full is because, that you still have the outstanding bill amount of £60.99 (including VAT) still to be paid.

However, to discuss this matter further, you'll need to contact the debt recovery agency and they'll be happy to help.

Thanks again for your email. I'm sure once you contact them, your query will be sorted out soon.”

I’m not sure where I should go from here. They haven’t told me what the charges are for, which I explicitly asked them to do. Do I just phone the agency and pay up or do contact T-mobile again?

I’ve got the £60 so its not like I can’t pay it, I just don’t want to pay for something just because they’ve told me to without giving me any information about it.

Also, I’m 7 months pregnant and on a temporary contract which finishes in 2 weeks so I’m wondering if its worth the hassle and whether I should just pay up while I know I have the money to pay for it.

If anyone could give me a bit of advise on what they think I should do I’d be really grateful

    Yes,
    You should contact the agency only to notify them that the said agency is appointed by T for debt recovery and you contest 'the amounts were all clear. No outstanding balances.' And tell them that as this issue is under dispute, taking any action against you by the agency will involve them as a party in the dispute.
    They would not bother contacting you again.
    Only if you are sure that you have nothing outstanding.
    And
    If you doubt, ask T to send to the details of the amount along with the copies of the bills two months previous to the contested one alongwith the copy of final bill
    I believe that you must have got a final bill from T saying £0.00 outstanding amd must have filed it.
    You know ur circumstances better than I do. Write a letter and keep it close when you call T;/ agency.
    Also advise them that u r going to put that in writing and send recorded delivery. Also in the letter, indicate your preference of written communication only and you would not entertain any telephonic communication. Also set a time frame of 7 or 14 working days (for T only:- failing which dispute will be considered settled to the satisfaction of both parties, T-mobile and myself that there is no monies outstanding against me.)
    Thats what I always do......written communication, keeping record> never failed me.

  • they done the exact same thing to me, i have had harrasing phone calls and threatening letters. did you get a letter from someone called buchanan clark and wells?

  • No it was from Red Debt Collection Services. The thing that annoys me the most is that I cancelled the contract in 2007 and haven't heard anything from them until now.

    I've sent letters off today to T-Mobile and Red so hopefully I'll get some answers soon.

    Many providers do a 'who owes us a little bit' troll every few years. Particularly during a crunch. You've likely been selected as owing 'a little bit' and it might be worth them seeing if they can recover it from you. Ask the DCA for the statement that the bill refers to. It might just be you cancelled the DD too soon and your last bill didn't get paid?
