MSE Insert December 2011:

Please note this discussion was first started in 2009 meaning the comments may be out of date. Another company, So much cheaper, has told us it's receiving calls but it can't deal with ones to 89911 and 69001 as it's not taken those over.

Back to the original discussion...

Hi, whilst on holiday in July I texted what I thought was Radio 1 to try and get a request played to calm my 3 screaming children in the back of the car!!! However it would appear I sent it to the wrong number, and I have been getting a series of "sexy" texts back! I have ignored them so far as they have just been silly, but thismorning I got one saying

"alright, so your message was a bit strange, you messg'd me regarding your holidy to england? explain pls? Free msg then £1.50"

Does this mean next time they text me it will cost me £1.50, or does it mean I would be charged £1.50 if I reply and tell them to STOP? It has never given me the usual phrase "text STOP to stop receiving" which is why I havent up until now.

The number I received the messages from is 89911.

Can anyone advise on what I should do that isnt going to end up costing me lots of money?
Feel free to thank me, it makes my toes tingle and my ears go warm :T

  • Check this thread out as others have also had the same issues!

Seems texting back STOP should work.
  • I have texted "STOP" back and received a delivery confirmation but so far no confirmation that I will no longer receive messages. Thanks for the pointer to that site though - Ive been receivin irritating texts from a few numbers so have looked at those too.

Here is some info that might be of help to you. I think you should check your bill as there is a very good chance you have been charged £1.50 per text from these cowboys.

If you have text back 'STOP' and they continue to arrive make a complaint to Phone Pay Plus in order to 'try' to get you money refunded.

There is plent of info on this and other forums about 'Unsolicited Reverse Bill Texts', try a google. You will find you are not on your own.

I noticed that you say that you have received texts from other companies, this is how they work. Your number will be added to a customer list which is sold to other 'cowboys', this is illegal but no one will stop it. Contact your network and demand some assistance. They will be earning up to 50% of the cost of the text, that you have been charged, as administration.

PhonepayPlus has the following information about the shortcode number 89911.

This is a text message service charged at premium rate. The types of services operating on this number can be ring tones, jokes, games tarot, chat, mobile internet services (WAP) and more.
    • This service costs £1.50 per text
If you would like to find out more about this service you should contact the company listed below.

If you want to log a complaint to PhonepayPlus online please click here.
    Alternatively, you can call our helpline on 0800 500 212 (Mon-Fri, 0800-1800).
To cancel a subscribtion service (services that charge a regular fee - for example £5 per week) you simply need to send a text with the words "STOP ALL" to the shortcode number

    NOTE:

Do not call FTXT on the 08707 number as this is also a premium rate number, which will add insult to injury.
  • Text STOP back to the number, or try and find out the company that is sending them.
