Hello
i'm trying to get my head around my electricity usage so I can be even more MSE and I wondered if any of you guys can help - i don't really get it all you see
I am with EON on the electricityOnline Extra Saver 13 plan as they said it would be the cheapest option for me I pay a monthly direct debit now and they claim I should never now be in debit with them!
but i don't understand this primary and secondary units malarky, I'm not on any night rate or anything like that so why do I have 2 rates? can anyone help?
If I'm reading it right the first 84 units are charged at a higher rate than the rest - so is that just a stealth standing charge payment?
Thanks

Hi determinedtodothis:hello:
Just wanted to give you a bit of info for the primary and secondary units and how this is billed.
You are charged for 900 kWh at the primary rate per year, this is then broken up in to quarters for electricity.
If your bill covers an exact quarter of 91 days you will be charged your first 225 kWh at the primary rate.
Most of the time the bills cover slightly more or less than 91 days and this is why the amount of primary units used per quarter can differ.
Below is the calculation we use to determine your primary units on a statement;
900kWh for the year
Divide this by the number of days in the year 365
Then multiply this by the number of days the bill covers
This will then give you the amount of units that will be charged at the primary rate.
So for example, if your bill covered a 100 day period, you would be charged for 247 units at the primary rate. You will not in any circumstances pay for more than 900kWh in a year period.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks Helena
So how can I work out what my monthly expenditure is roughly as I go?
for example my metre readings are:
1: 01585
2: 08065
3: 03725
Last time they were read:
1: 1565
2:7895
3:3457
So how from that can I calculate what my bill stands at, at the minute?TOTAL: (1.9.2008) £[strike]20,971.00[/strike] (02.12.10)£11,006.07£9,262.93 Paid off (Since LBM)Debt Free Date [strike]2021[/strike] 2015Savings £100 Dec NSD 11/20, Sealed pot challenger 1043:xmassign:0 -
Hi determinedtodothis,
Just wondering what sort of meter you have, as you have provided three meter readings?
You can calculate your bill up to the reads you have given by using the formula in my first post.
You will need to use the number of days the readings cover, so from the date of your last bill up to the readings you have just taken.
Be aware, that this may be different on your next bill as the number of days the bill covers will have changed by then.

It is a 'stealth' standing charge but it is better than a daily standing charge in that those who use little energy (say no gas heating over summer) can pay less some quarters. (For 99% of electricity users this is not relevant, though.)
To estimate your bills work out what your 'effective monthly' standing charge is. This is the difference between two tier prices multipled by the monthly allowance.
900kWh is 75 kWh per month. So say Tier 1 is 22.5p and Tier 2 is 10.5p your monthly charge is (Tier 1 - Tier 2) * 75 or (12p * 75) or £9
You can now just look at your meter readings and see how many kWhs have been used. You can just multiply this by the Tier 2 price to know what your cost will be.
Also, work out how many Tier 2 units you get to the pound. eg, 10.5p gives you ( 1 / 0.105 ) nine and a half units to the pound. You could round that up to ten units to the pound which would be a slight underestimate of the cost. So you pay £9 per month plus £1 for every ten units.
Of course, with E-on, there are discounts of 13.5 to 18% to take off those costs.0 -
(Hmm, just noticed there are three meters. Never mind.)0

Thanks thats why im a bit confused EON replaced it before xmas and suddenly I got done for about £300 worth of charges!
Its white and if i press the blue button it gives me 4 different sets of numbers? the fourth one is all the numbers added together - i've asked Eon to send someone out to show me how it works but they said noTOTAL: (1.9.2008) £[strike]20,971.00[/strike] (02.12.10)£11,006.07£9,262.93 Paid off (Since LBM)Debt Free Date [strike]2021[/strike] 2015Savings £100 Dec NSD 11/20, Sealed pot challenger 1043:xmassign:0 -
thanks kim
i'm totally confused by it all - my metre gives 4 readings, my bill shows 3 and the tarrif only 2!!!TOTAL: (1.9.2008) £[strike]20,971.00[/strike] (02.12.10)£11,006.07£9,262.93 Paid off (Since LBM)Debt Free Date [strike]2021[/strike] 2015Savings £100 Dec NSD 11/20, Sealed pot challenger 1043:xmassign:0 -
So it sounds like you have three rates then the total, this would normally indicate an economy 10 or an RHT meter.
I would ring and ask E.ON what meter type they have on record for you, what sort of meter did you have before the change?

I was also working out my own electricity readings and thanks to kims explanation of the day units, I have managed to build a calculator to do it all automatically.
It should come in handy for most e.on customers to work out their bill.
I can't post links yet so hopefully someone will repost it properly to save on the old copy and paste functions.

Hope that helps0 -
...It should come in handy for most e.on customers to work out their bill....
As it excludes the myriad of discounts that apply to most peoples tariffs, it's probably of little use to most people.
Probably better to use one of the existing comparison sites that'll do the full job.
Edit: what's more it appears to be incorrect as it wrongly indicates a discount if you are a low user and don't exceed the tier 1 level.
