Our puppy has Burns because its hypoallergenic. He gets demonic (like a child who can't have e numbers) after eating pretty much every food we've tried. The price kills me - I have 2 other dogs who eat *literally* anything. They are having Wagg complete with some wet food at the minute, but they can eat anything, especially if its on special offer at the time ;)

Puppy has Burns chicken and brown rice for his breakfast and a tub of Naturediet with some Burns hypoallergenic mixer for his dinner. Again, this mixer is ridiculously priced but seems to be having the desired effect.

I am hoping that when he a "grown up" he will be able to switch to what the other pooches have but I am not holding out much hope!

Oh and he used to have Iams as this was the best of a bad bunch (with puppy's behaviour) but as soon as I found out about their testing it was back to the drawing board. Glad in a way as this was how I discovered Burns and Naturediet.

My Yorkie was on Burns when I got him but he went off it and wouldn't touch it at all in the end, I changed him to RC but his poos were very soft and a he did a huge volume. He's now on James Wellbeloved which he likes and his poos are perfect, except when he gets at the cat food:rolleyes:

I've used Burns for my dogs and cats and they thrived on it, Burns produce some very good literature about feeding your dog, and the company is owned by a Vet. When the credit crunch started I had to look at what I was using and changed to Autarky, £12.50, for 15 kgs from Costco, the dogs love it have fresh breath and health poos etc and nice shiney coats, because of the breed they have to be on a low protien food which Autarky is. I've just been looking after a Jack Russel who is fed on Royal Canin Jack Russel and she tried the Autarky and loved it, she went home with a bag of it, the cat loved the Royal Canine though. Costco cat food rumoured to be Hills Science is also very economical and tasty. It's hard to know what to feed our little friends but I do look at the ethics of the food producers and try to avoid the ones who test on uneccessarily on animals.
One cost cutting tip is to look at food marked for 'working dogs' which is VAT free, and of course your dogs job is to be your pet and friend. Good luck in finding a food that suits.

I tend to mix their dried food so they get a mix of whatever I've been able to get on special offer It seems to suit them as well as my pocket :D

D'uh... I never thought of doing that

    Hello

I'm posting this on behalf of my father if anyone could offer advice please...he feeds his two small dogs on Burns dry dog food, he has been told today though the place he buys its isn't stocking it anymore as they are changing to supplying Royal Canin as it is a better food.

Do you think thats correct or is it as good as Burns? Price wise will it work out at a similar cost?

    Many thanks
If you ring Burns they will deliver for you. We have had burns mini bites delivered for years with no problems.

Thank you for all your replies x

Just to update I saw my Dad last night and the place he gets his dog food had given him some RC samples, the dogs woofed it down so he has decided that because they loved it so much its worth paying the extra. As my husband pointed out this was probably due more to it being something different and a novelty after being fed on burns for years than anything else.

In that case do keep an eye on the internet petfood sites, most (all?) sell RC and often have deals.

  • Iams are horrific, I posted a link here from defra about what they do to animals! Not sure about their food, I used to feed it before I knew better but didn't know about ingredients then

IMO wet food is better for Cats, in the wild they get almost all of their moisture from their food, wet contains lots of moisture, doesn't cause FLUTD & problems like that (If only on dry the Cat drinks about half of what it should) for males i'd never ever feed only dry just in case, they tend to get blockages. Dry seems much more convenient for us Owner's (Storage/not going off or smelling/cheaper) but I do what's best for the Cat not me.
Anyway mine gets wet & dry as she can't have either alone without the other, but generally i'd keep any Cat I had on wet as it doesn't cause tooth issues generally (Most dry just shatters & doesn't clean the teeth, or gets stuck on teeth & causes problems)

Course this is all my opinions, but based on lots of internet articles about it all which made total sense! However the Dog gets dry as i've not read anything yet about wet being best!

Strange that you think wet is ok for cat but not for dog... dry does not get stuck on teeth & cause problems - my two's teeth are far better since taking them off wet completely....

    because of the ingredients
but guess it's a matter of see how dog fares on it.
