If his local shop is not stocking it any more, why not order it for him online? Save changing the dogs for to a more expensive one.

Do check out the on-line stores. They often have special promotions like 2 for 1, etc. They all offer free delivery if you spend over a certain amount, and it often works out a lot cheaper than buying from a pet-store.

I buy my cat whatever good make of food happens to be on promotion at the time.

You can often go through a cashback site for an extra discount.

I do wonder though, how much of our concept of 'better' dog foods is based on hype, and how much on facts, and it concerns me that many people are strugling to keep pets in the current financial climate, perhaps partially because they think a dog needs prohibitively expensive food.

I would never feed anything other than dry to my cats, but I have wondered as you say how much is facts & how much hype.

Is Iams as good as Royal Canin for instance?

    Its a lot cheaper:rolleyes:

personally, I would not fed Iams as I am not comfortable with their animal testing (vivisection, not just seeing how animals do on their food) but I know years ago we only ever fed our cats on omega and go-cat, which was cheap, and they were all fit and healthy and lived to good ages...

There does not seem to be much unbiased research, presumably as the only people who have the money to undertake research are the big pet food companies, who clearly have a vested interest...

Iams are horrific, I posted a link here from defra about what they do to animals! Not sure about their food, I used to feed it before I knew better but didn't know about ingredients then

IMO wet food is better for Cats, in the wild they get almost all of their moisture from their food, wet contains lots of moisture, doesn't cause FLUTD & problems like that (If only on dry the Cat drinks about half of what it should) for males i'd never ever feed only dry just in case, they tend to get blockages. Dry seems much more convenient for us Owner's (Storage/not going off or smelling/cheaper) but I do what's best for the Cat not me.
Anyway mine gets wet & dry as she can't have either alone without the other, but generally i'd keep any Cat I had on wet as it doesn't cause tooth issues generally (Most dry just shatters & doesn't clean the teeth, or gets stuck on teeth & causes problems)

Course this is all my opinions, but based on lots of internet articles about it all which made total sense! However the Dog gets dry as i've not read anything yet about wet being best!

I'm a bit sus about that with Iams, don't they all do testing?
Why would Iams do it & not the others?
If they do/did it, why didn't they stop when this story broke?

I'm a big fan of dried cat food & nothing would make me feed tinned. Dried is also better for the teeth.

Dental dried is but most feed normal not dental dried which can cause dental problems, I don't know if Iams have stopped testing or not, maybe they have (Someone will know!) but seeing as they definitely did, then i'd never use a company that feels this stuff is ok

    (From PETA) http://www.peta.org.uk/factsheet/files/images/iams%20factsheet_UK72.pdf#xml=http://www.petasearch.org/texis/search/pdfhi.txt?query=Iams&pr=PETAUK&prox=page&rorder=1000&rprox=1000&rdfreq=500&rwfreq=500&rlead=500&rdepth=0&sufs=0&order=r&cq=&id=458ad387fa

Most do test, but generally they test actual pet Dogs, living with their family & with their Owner's consent, not dogs in labs. Also they test things without pain or suffering being used. Nothing like Iams!

    I guess every food is different, Orijen won't put grains in their food, yet others do but why? It's not needed. Not sure why anyone'd test on animals like this though :{

I don't & never have used Iams anyway, I just used them as an example of cheaper pet food than Royal Canin.

I just tried my two with a small bag I bought of Orijen, George loved it, Charlie wouldn't try it. Charlie is the fussy one.

All three of mine looked at me like that when I tried them on Natures Harvest, they wouldn't go near it! They looked at me the same way when I offered them Iams once as well - ducks love that btw

The cats didn't take to Orijen either but wil eat RC Exigent and really love RC Feline slimness No 2, which is great for their weight control.

I tend to mix their dried food so they get a mix of whatever I've been able to get on special offer, JWB, RC, Hills, plus some Opticat and Purina 1. I find if I just give them one food at a time they get bored, but by mixing a few into their feeding tin they only get the same mix for a week at a time or so. It seems to suit them as well as my pocket :D
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D
