Sharm el Sheikh

I'm going in January for the first time, and don't know too much about it.

Those who have been before - could you answer a few questions please?

Do you need to get a jab or any kind?

I've read a few reviews, and a few have come down with a tummy bug, or food poisoning. I'm staying in a fully inclusive hotel. What foods are best avoided to prevent a stomach upset?

Do the hotels have wi-fi. If I take my laptop, will I be able to use it free of charge.

Thanks.

Sharm el Sheik is lovely! I'm going again myself for New Year Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
You are advised to get certain injections although I can't remember which Im sure someone will be along soon to tell you and if not ask your GP.

Chances are you will get a tummy bug but whatever you do DO NOT take imodium or any other UK remedy it will not work and will probably make it worse. Go to a local chemist and for abt 13 EGP they will give you tablets that will clear it up in 24 hours.

I always take antibacterial handgel and use it regularly especially after touching money and before eating. You will see the money is filthy and you really don't want to know where abouts on their person a lot of the Egyptians keep it!

Don't worry too much about particular foods indulge yourself and try plenty of different things just make sure everything is washed in bottled water and that and ice involved is from bottled water.

A lot of hotels have wi-fi but it is payable usually which hotel are you staying in?

All in all you will have a fab time remember your sun cream though the wether reposts say it was about 22 degrees on 1st January 2009 I was there and it was that temp in the shade at 8am!

you are best asking your doctor, we were advised to have injections then a booster after 6 month for 10 year protection. the injections were free from my doctors.

This covers the whole of Egypt rather than just Sinai peninsula but worth a read.

My partner, daughter and I are also going in January.

When are you going? We're going on the 4th.

Just been looking at money, weather etc but a lot of posts are quite old. This is the newest one i've found.

I have been to Cairo but that was over 10 years ago in September and it was HOT so i know it's going to be lovely when we go.

We are also staying in an all inclusive hotel called Coral Sea Resort or something like that.

I can't wait as it means we won't be getting any christmas presents (apart from my daughter) becuase of this but it's worth it. I'm just glad my daughter is able to see the world at a young age becuase both my partner and I never had the privilege as kids.

I went in Jan didnt get a tummy bug, didnt eat salads and didnt swim in the hotel pool - coincidence??????????/

I went to my doctor told the nurse where i was going and got about 3 injections, hepatitus, tetanus etc not essential but recommended, got my boosters 6 months later covered for god knows how many years now.

Take 1 & 2 US Dollar notes for tipping, dont overtip as some waiters end up earning more than doctors with the amount they earn in tips.

My family and i have recently returned from 2 weeks in Sharm.
We stayed on a water park and none of us got tummy bugs!
We ate what we wanted (other than salads & their ice lollys) and made sure that we used hand sanitiser as often as we could.
We visited a travel clinic efore we left and was advised that injections were not neccesary for Sharm although would be in other areas of Egypt.

We spent a great Christmas & New Year holiday in Sharm, fabulous weather, great beach and sealife that you would not believe. We didn't get the jabs and although at a 5 star, did suffer for a day from "Pharaohs Revenge".

The biggest threat of contamination is, as stated, the local currency. I've travelled a lot all over the world and never came across such filthy, smelly notes in general circulation. I'm not being over the top here, there are times that you simply don't want to touch some of it!

Sharm is a great holiday location but don't think of it as being representative of Egypt. Its the same as saying a holiday in Blackpool would tell you about the culture of England.

Whilst I agree about the imodium as it just retains the poison your body is trying to get rid of, you don't need any tablets as most cases will clear up within 24 hours anyway. Just ensure that you drink plenty of fluids (not alcohol) and take Rehydration Treatment

And wash your hands BEFORE and after using the toilet or eating food
