Refused Car Ins. Claim - Named Driver under 25

Hi, Can someone please help!
I got my son insured for my car - he is 18, as a named driver both when he was a learner and also when he passed his test 6 weeks ago. The policy is fully comp, he is the only named driver, no other cars in household.
He had an accident which was his fault, the other car write off my car un driveable - the Insurance Company are now saying that because he was in the car not accompanied by someone over the age of 25 and/or becuase he was under 25 - and passengers were 17 yrs old - that the claim will not be paid.
I cannot understand this as he is a named driver and no mention of this previously only when he was a learner which goes without saying.
Can anyone tell me if this sounds right? I know there is something that states an insured driver with their own policy if under 25 cannot automatically drive another vehicle and be covered 3rd party, but the reason for refusal of my claim does not sound right - can anyone please advise?

Was the insurer Quinn by any chance?
It sounds like the insurers still think he was a provisional license holder and by failing to have someone over 25 supervising, he would not be acting in accordance with his license.
Did you tell them when he passed his test?0 -
Sounds like Collingwood to me.
Can you confirm the name of the Insurer?0 -
Hi, i did inform Ins Comp when he passed his test and he is on policy as named driver with full UK licence.
The Insurance Comp is More Than.0 -
I'd be interested in hearing the outcome of this Debbie and hope you get it sorted out.
My husband is insured with Morethan and I'm a named driver/spouse on his car, I then got my own car and when my son started learning I wanted to put him on the insurance but Morethan wouldn't touch drivers under 25.
I then went to Quinn(mattymoo has worried me with his/her comment, is there something I should be aware of please?) and now my son's about to pass his test my insurance will go up by an amount that would make your curl.0 -
soblivion - take a look at this thread about Quinn - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=518786&highlight=quinn
You've discovered one of the pitfalls already. They are competetive for provisional license holders but the premium rockets once they pass their test.
The other main issue is claims. Not so much of a problem if you are TP cover only but claims under fire and theft of TPFT cover and fully comp policies can be fraught with issues.0 -
They always remind me of Ryan Air, I think if O'Leary ever wanted to to start an Insurer it would be along the same lines.
As matty mentioned they quote low premiums for provisional licence holders and then charge a massive additional premium when they pass.0 -
Personally, I wouldn't insure a pedal cycle with Quinn although I'm more than happy to travel with Ryanair. The worst that can happen with Ryanair is that it may cost me a few quid if my bags are overweight. With Quinn, I could go bankrupt. Some of their policy conditions are onerous beyond belief.0

Did you tell them when he passed his test?
"You must be supervised by a person who is over 21 and who has held a valid drivers license for 3 or more years."
so it shouldn't be that?
Do they think that he was the main driver of the car rather than a named driver?
I'm struggling to find a copy of their T&C on the website
*EDIT* have found this
http://www.expertcardirectory.co.uk/direct-insurance-more-than.htm
Which states
If this is the case then it seems odd that they let you put him as a named driver without telling you thisUp to 4 additional named car drivers can be added to the insurance policy but they must also be between 21 and 74 years at the beginning of the policy.

Thanks I did find that but with it not saying T&C
... I can't see anything about drivers under 25 on there unless I'm being dim again:rolleyes:
I was being dim:rolleyes:
has a provisional driving licence or who is under 25 years of age (or both) and who is not on the listof named drivers in the schedule even if your policy covers any driver; or
but OP says he is a named driver *confused*0
