Thanks but that is defo not an option for now as for (1) i am not experienced in reinstalling and (2) they don't have the disks for everything as it was an 'expert' who sold them the machine as I understand.fuzzball172 wrote: »With really bad infections, often the most drastic course of action is the best. That's why I am being so cautious as I don't want to become one of 'those sort of experts' if you understand me.:o
Any other options?0 -
Which option of 'safe mode' is best please?[Deleted User] wrote:Hi,
have you tried running them in safe mode?0 -
Hi,
just go for safe mode on it's own.0 -
where abouts in the UK are you? If you are in Merseyside I can help, if they are willing to pay for the service. This is part of what I do as a day job, I should be able to sort out what the 'expert' has done. If you are elsewhere in the UK I can recommend a laptop specialist repair company, who might be able to help.

What a horrible uncharitable way of offering help. I work in the I.T field as well but wouldn't dream of asking for money on a forum for money SAVING experts...
At a guess might it be down to permissions?
Could you try giving the following a go then try running the programs you've mentioned above (in each case, a full update first then a full scan if possible)?

We don't need people advertising themselves on here (unless it's ladies!!)0 -
Thanks. I have suggested this to them and they are going to think about it.fuzzball172 wrote: »With really bad infections, often the most drastic course of action is the best. Format and reinstall windows, its the best way to ensure your machine is clean

I am not prepared to offer to do this as I stick to what I know and what I'm confident with and it's years since I did a re-install.
Thanks for the thought.
Yes I have a feeling this is a possible way forward.Deleted_User wrote: »What a horrible uncharitable way of offering help. I work in the I.T field as well but wouldn't dream of asking for money on a forum for money SAVING experts...

I haven't yet checked if the main user account has administrator rights or not but in any case I right clicked and tried 'run as administrator' and no go.
I'll look at that link thanks.
When I tried to run Avira it only got about 1/3 of the way through and blue screened.
It did this twice!
I have since read on another thread here about a virus called something like 'personal anti virus'?
I did in fact see something like this when I was trying to resolve the probs but my research suggests this virus attacke XP not Vista?
Not sure if I follow the solution suggested if it will cause probs on a Vista machine?
Thank you to you all for help so far.:T0 -
Flossie, I hope you come right with this problem...Beer meter E[.\.......]F0

I can never understand why they are not sold with a working set of antivirus/malware progs. They can always be changed at a later date and at least there would be some level of protection other than windows own.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
