I would appreciate some help please.
I was asked to install some security onto my neighbours daughter's laptop.
I find that she has been accessing the internet with NO security in place.
The identifiable problems are as follows:
1. Windows defender won't update
2. Malwarebytes won't run (have got it on the desktop but when I click it to update and run I get a message saying 'has stopped working'...
3. Ccleaner runs and has clearded out a load of c%*6p
4. Superantispyware is on desktop but won't run (same as mbam)
5. All Vista updates are up to date and ok.
6. Hijack this is on desktop but won't run
Have I said enough?
I have a hunch there is something in the security settings but I can't find it or there is a real nasty blocking me but what to do?
Help?

Oh yes and I tried to run the Eset Nod 32 online scanner and it won't play with that either. Sends me into a loop.:o0

Hi,
have you tried running them in safe mode?0 -
Rename the programs that won't run i.e. hijackthis.exe to flossy.exe and then run these.
Typical sign of an infected machine. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
No. Can't remember how! Ages since I last had to do so![Deleted User] wrote:Hi,

It has allowed me to install Avira and it has run the initial scan and found a few nasties.Rename the programs that won't run i.e. hijackthis.exe to flossy.exe and then run these.
Typical sign of an infected machine.
Still can't run the other programmes and I have renamed them as suggested.
Anything else I can do?
Thanks.0 -

If you have renamed the mbam-setup.exe file to flossy.exe the infection will not be expecting a file called flossy to be run and therefore will not prevent it executing. A renamed file should run OK. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Restart the computer and tap the F8 key as it starts up. Then select safe mode from the options presented.flossy_splodge wrote: »No. Can't remember how! Ages since I last had to do so!

I promise you I've renamed it and the others (with obviously changes to the name) and none of them will fire up.If you have renamed the mbam-setup.exe file to flossy.exe the infection will not be expecting a file called flossy to be run and therefore will not prevent it executing. A renamed file should run OK.
The message I get is the same, namely, this programme has stopped working etc.
I renamed exactly what you said ie flossy.exe
Was that right?
Thank you for being indulgent - I get really frustrated when things don't go according to plan and I appreciate you making it easy for me!Restart the computer and tap the F8 key as it starts up. Then select safe mode from the options presented.
Will try that and see if I can get any of them to run in safe mode.
I am incidentally not on the problem computer at the mo, but it WILL let me log onto MSE!
An infection that knows where to draw the line!:D0 -
With really bad infections, often the most drastic course of action is the best. Format and reinstall windows, its the best way to ensure your machine is clean

The initial Avira scan I mentioned was just the short one (about a minute) it runs when first installed. It wouldn't let me update so I decided to run it anyway and it got to the point of showing 27 detections then blue screened!
I've switched it off for now (it was trying to reboot) as it is not my computer or even a family members so I am a bit cautious what is best to do next?
Any advice please?0
