I only have to wash my hair once a week but it is very dry and coarse which brings its own set of issues. Have you tried dying your hair with a dye that lifts colour or having it permed or chemically straightened? All of these things dry out my hair beyond belief and I had a friend who had really greasy hair but managed it by having a perm and highlights which reduced the lankness of it

    I've been Money Tipped!
I am in my 50's and still have greasy hair! I have quite a short style so just wash it every day in the shower.

When it was longer I did sometimes just wash the fringe as that is the part that is the worst.

I have been washing my hair every day (or at least the fringe) since I was about 13 so have just got used to it. If I try not to wash it at the weekend it just feels so horrible and itchy that I end up washing it.

Sorry I have no real tips for you. I would say that a lot of people say washing your hair every day is not good but I have had quite a few hairdressers say the opposite. They have said you wash your face and body every day because they get dirty so why not your hair?

  • I think your hair gets used to how often you wash it. I used to do mine every other day but then read that leaving a three day gap between washes was best (something to do with stripping out the oils and making your hair produce more of them I think). It was nasty at first but eventually my hair got used to it, so it might be worth just persisting with it.

Otherwise Lee Stafford dry shampoo is a good quick fix I find, as is using a detox shampoo regularly to get rid of build up if you use lots of products as that can make it worse (hence why I rarely bother with wax as it just makes my hair worse). Likewise, it might be worth only conditioning the ends of your hair if it's long, rather than all over if that's what you do.

Also on the Lush solid shampoo note they do one specifically for greasy hair called Jumping Juniper.

I've been using "I love Juicy" shampoo and "Veganese" Conditioner from Lush.
The two work well together, and the shampoo especially leaves my hair feeling soft and silky. I'm not so bothered about the conditioner... it doesn't go on as well as I'd like and it makes me feel like I want to use more on it, even though I know it's enough. (Hard to describe really...)
The Shampoo contains Seaweed so helps calm greasy hair. I still wash my hair every day but perhaps more out of habit. I do feel like I could possibly leave it an extra day, but I love the feeling of newly washed hair too much to do that. Doh!

I've recently bought these too after seeing it recommended on here for greasy hair. It definitely is much better. I have always had to wash my hair every other day but am trying to go an extra day as while the roots get greasy, the ends are quite dry. Ive only used it twice but it is definitely better than previous. Will see how it looks tomorrow morning when I get up as to whether it will surpass the usual 2 day limit.
I know what u mean about the conditioner though ALR, quite a watery consistency which feels like you havent put enough on but I too am resisting putting on more and so far it seems fine.

No, I've never dyed my hair and would be reluctant to do so. :o

OP,having your hair up or clipped back hides a multitude of sins, there's some great advice in this thread :D

I'd actually overlooked this fact, might try that if things get really bad! :D

I do only condition the very tips, heck, it would be far worse if I did it all over!! Hairdressers always condition to the roots, no idea why.

Headband/headscarves - these are great for hiding sins if they suit your look.

    Great idea! Thanks! :D

Having found no remedy to the oily hair with expensive shampoos, I then tried seven different dry shampoos.....james brown, klorane, tigi rockaholic, angelfish, batiste, toni and guy, mark hill..............(My ideal job is to do things like this and get paid, rather than fork out my own dosh! But I do love to browse and buy beauty products)
My favourite is definitely klorane. You can buy it abroad or online for about £7....so a bit pricier than Batiste, but very effective. It's like a sandblaster, as opposed to a spray. It really does work. You might wonder if you'll ever bother washing your hair again!
Toni and Guy has a lovely fresh smell and probably comes second.
Now, you do have to follow the instructions and brush it out a little, if you have dark hair like me. Unfortunately, with all dry shampoos you run the risk of looking like you have gone grey overnight. Klorane is no exception. Bumble and Bumble do a powder dry shampoo which is available in different colours. I would have loved to have included this product in my review but at £28 I thought it's a bit hard to justify. I would love to hear from anyone (wealthy enough to have tried it!) who has a view on it. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience!! :A I will try the Klorane if I can find it. I've tried the T&G (is it the one in the red can?) but Boots only seem to have the travel size. £28 for B&B does seem extortionate, I could never justify that!!!
I wash my hair twice a week and stopped using conditioner after spending some time in India. Over there I used an ayurvedic shapoo absolutely wonderful, and didn't need conditioner becasue the water was not as hard as in London.

    Sounds perfect!!!

Are you sure you are washing and rinsing properly?

sounds stupid I know, but DD's hair is always dull and greasy if not done right

I rinse it for at least 5 mins, while she moans at me:rotfl:

I didn't realise you could only multi-quote up to three posts, ah well...

Yes, I do rinse for aaages, hopefully long enough but you never know!!! :o

I've tried Asda hairspray this morning, it's not as good as Elnett but not bad...

    Dont wash it

Takes about six weeks of not washing and it will become self cleansing and no longer greasy
