I'm going to do some mpg calculations over the next few months and see if I can detect a statistically significant difference between supermarket petrol and big brand stuff. Ancedotally I think that there's 10-20 miles per tank in it, which is about 3-4mpg.Happy chappy0

I drive a V6 sports car and I've been monitoring my MPG for the last 18 months using fuel bought at all the major supplies and supermarkets. There's no significant difference in my MPG other than BP Ultimate that was a fair bit less.Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Well, I'll do my long term analysis and see if there's a statistically significant difference. Different engines could produce different results.Happy chappy0

I`ve been having a bash at this for nearly a year now, I keep tabs with an excel spreadsheet on my PDA. I tend to go for the cheapest petrol taking into account points at tesco or sainsburys. Once petrol really ramped up in price ( and my company mileage rate didnt keep up) I started driving much more economically. I used to think 430 miles per tank was a good one but now I have managed 480 on a couple of occaisions.
Brand seems to make no real difference, my best ever tank was Shell but Sainsburys is just as good. Best I think to search out the cheapest. In my case fill up at Southend Tesco, miles from my house but if I `m out that way...

Anyone any experience of 'broquet' pellets or the inline fuel savers that you put in your fuel line?

Mk3 Golf is large and quite heavy, 1.4 engine will be a bit underpowered, so I wouldn't expect amazing mpg from it unless driven very gently.Happy chappy0

Also, as the car gets older and the mileage piles up, cars tend to start using more fuel and oil.If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

Hi!
On a similar subject.
I'm getting 28 mpg out of my 1.6 Automatic Almera with half to two thirds of that on the motorway. It's been recently serviced and the tyres OK and I don't think I thrash it. Is there anything else I can do to improve matters as it does seem rather thirsty?
Thanks
