I repeat the question posed in post #6.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hi Heinz,

The Prefix 1280 does work depending on the call provider you have chosen to route your calls through. If you are unable to use the prefix take a look at the link below.

Thanks

I am the official company representative of BT. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"

That in reply to:

So Nigel Stagg, the Managing Director of BT Customer Services, is writing to customers with FALSE information?

Should be easy to clarify. Presumably, his direct email address is nigel.stagg@bt.com

Come on. Answer the point, even if only to say "I will check this out tomorrow", but please don't blabber.

Well, Robbie, BT Staff Representative trumps Nigel Stagg, the Managing Director of BT Customer Services. It's called empowerment.

Well, I've emailed and the email hasn't bounced back so, with luck, I'll hear something tomorrow.
Dear Mr Stagg

I understand that you wrote to one residential customer about 1571 and BT Privacy (Caller Display) on 16/8/09 with the words, "If you'd like to use these services without being charged for them, and you're able to use it with your new company, you should use our 1280 override code to make the required number of calls. If you can't use 1280, you'll need to make operator-controlled or BT Chargecard calls instead".

There is considerable confusion regarding this. Indeed, on the moneysavingexpert.com Home Phones forum, official BT company representatives have stated exactly the opposite (see http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=24329535#post24329535). I would, therefore, appreciate your unequivocal assurance that your letter did not inadvertently contain inaccurate information and that calls made using a BT Chargecard and charged to the landline account in question, do count as 'qualifying calls' for free Caller Display and/or basic 1571.

My confusion arises because I don't understand why it is thought using a Chargecard should work for obtaining free Caller Display.

Firstly, the number to phone to use a Chargecard is a freefone number - so it's not a chargeable call. Secondly, an account is debited because the call made is authenticated by the card number and a PIN, not by the line the call is made from.

As for the idea an operator connected call would replace 1280 rearranging 'leg arm an and a costs' comes to mind. And the call would still go over the same network as a directly dialled call.

It had no link, It was not to long and I have no idea why.
• Is there a reason for you to anticipate being billed a low usage charge relating to these services?
I have recently switched my calls to Orange, but kept my line rental with BT. The letter from Nigel Stagg was confirmation of the switch and the date it would take place, then going on to tell me I would be charged for 1571 and Caller Display (as part of Privacy at Home) unless I took the actions he suggested (posted yesterday) to register 2 BT calls per month or 6 per quarter. I have established that 1280 won't work with Orange, so I have obtained a BT chargecard.

Disappointingly, no reply to my email from Mr. Stagg yet.

How interesting, thanks for the additional information. BT sound as though they are concerned people may miss out on free Caller Display. Pity the advice is unsound.

It would be staggering if using a chargecard achieved what you want.
