it amazes me that parents complain about uniform but splash out on designer goods and the latest mobiles for their children.

people should stop whinging about uniforms, if they werent wearing a unifrom they would be wearing something!

Seems like its the law every year to moan about uniform!

Agreed, Red devil and what about football strips to show support for your favourite team? They are seriously crazy money but drive through most housing estates and kids are sitting around wearing them. ;)
Likewise Ugg boots don't come cheap but most teenage girls are provided with a pair for out of school hours.

My son starts secondary school in September, uniform is navy blazer with school logo, black trousers, white long sleeved shirts, clip on tie, pe tracksuit with school logo and gold coloured logoed polo shirt.

I bought his shirts from Asda when they were on offer and got him two pairs of black adjustable waist trousers when Asda did their offer of two trousers for a fiver, at the school uniform shop they wanted £14.95 EACH pair and their shirts were something like £12 for two shirts, the rest we bought from the Uniform shop, can anyone explain what the devil are " NON MARKING SOLED TRAINERS", what dont they want you to mark???????

When I was at primary school the only things bought through school were the jumpers with the badge embroidered on (although you could get a sew on patch with the badge and then attach that to a blue cardigan or jumper of your choice) and the ties, either real ones or the ones on a bit of elastic. I remember finding the elasticated ones fascinating but also thinking I was really cool because I had a 'proper' tie and could do it up myself aged 8!

At secondary school however pretty much everything had to come from the local sports shop - the only exceptions were shirts, tracksuit bottoms for PE and shoes. I remember my mum absolutely despairing of the jumpers because they used to get massive holes in the sleeves and had to be replaced every year, and they were not cheap.

Said school now has blazers rather than jumpers which are probably still hugely expensive. I also recall an incident where Year 10 were allowed to wear black uniforms with white shirts (previously it had been navy jumpers, maroon and white striped ties, grey skirts or trousers and blue shirts) which until then had been for Year 11 only, and a lot of parents kicked up a fuss about having to buy entirely new uniforms.

ETA: PE kits were the killer though. I had a sweatshirt, a polo shirt, a gym skirt, gym knickers for under the skirt, tracksuit pants, trainers, hockey boots and shin pads. And I hate sports!

These are trainers which will not mark the polished floor of a gymhall.
Most trainers have these, you just have to look for the "non-marking" sole logo usually on the sole itself.

Cheapest is just to buy cheap trainers with a white or light coloured sole. Some trainers with coloured soles can leave scuff type marks on the special sports hall floors. Normally you have to keep these for indoor use and have a separate pair for outdoors but a good wash in the sink between outdoor and indoor PE will do the job, you just need to get rid of any dirt or grit.

I hated my uniform for school. It looked horrific, and it must have cost my poor mum about £500 over the five years I was there (and that's with the £50 school uniform voucher the council gave her cos her and my dad were on benefits). My uniform went:

    Kilt-type skirt
Knee-length socks (in navy, could only be got at this one shop and the elastic went in two months) x5
Blouses (not shirts, they had to be blouses) x5
Jumper (navy blue and not warm enough)
    Leotard
    Dance leggings (like tights)
    PE T-shirt
    PE Skirt
    PE Knickers
    Plimsolls
    Hockey socks
    Hockey boots
Summer uniform (was a different coloured skirt and shirt - again 5 of those, but they were airtex and longer lasting, mine did 5 years)
    Replacement kilt skirt
    Replacement PE skirt and knickers
Upper school uniform (different skirt - 2 of those as I grew again)
Sweatshirt (in my 2nd year they brought in sweatshirts - warmer but they fell apart too) x2

And this doesn't include shoes and coats that matched regulations (no heel over 1 inch, coat had to be all black or all blue, no lee-way given at all)
    ** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **
    ** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
    **SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

Mine was similar elfen! Didn't have a kilt but a gymslip for first 3 years & then we were considered mature enough to wear a skirt. In the summer months it was a gingham summer dress (we had to have at least 2). It was a very tiny check and could only get it in one place.

Didn't have to have dance leggings but we had black leotards. In addition to your list we had to have a tie, house sash, blazer, beret and mac. Then we had to have our own hockey stick, tennis racquet and swim suit.

My only complaint is that the headmistress at my younger bro's school keeps changing the bloomin uniform. And you can only buy the school ties in one shop in town. She's been told she has to buy him a new one this year, and next year they are changing them again so when he goes up again he will have to have another new tie. Why they can't keep it the same as they did in my day (mine last all the way through!) i don't know!

£400 i've shelled out for uniforms for my 2.

Daughters blouses were £10 for 2, whereas sons were 5 for £10 and they were from M&S!

    DD's skirts were £15 each.

Tank tops and jumpers are £12 each.

School PE stuff, shorts, socks, polo top, rugby top, footy top, sweatshirt, then they have a tracksuit too.....bog off no way!

Oh and this year, they have to have 'school' bags, as in a bag set out by the school which is to be embroidered. They are bloody crap and won't last 10 minutes so I'm not happy about those at all!

Each year has a colour, so year 7 green, yr 8 blue, year 9 red and so on, but that colour goes with them right through their 5 years at school, so you can't pass on stuff to a younger child because their colour will be different ~ what a pain and a waste that is!

They can't have pumps either, it's got to be trainers, so there's trainers each and footy boots for son. Daughter is meant to have footy boots but they can go jump if they think i'm buying her some to do footy for one term ~ it's madness!

I can't get any of theirs in a Supermarket, i wish i could!

The only thing that annoys me, is that there is set stuff they need and you can only buy it in one place, so you can't shop around and get it cheaper elsewhere.

Luckily we live opposite the school so they don't need school coats.
