can some one give me any advice, here is a prefered spec i would like:

Pentium 1.8
40gb hard drive

You haven't said what you want to do with it! Will you just be running boring stuff like Word and Excel, or stuff that needs more CPU power, memory or hard disk space? Have you allowed for a printer? And Office software (unless you're getting Open Office, or similar)?

You ought to be able to get a pretty decent spec for a £550 laptop. Check in the weekend newspapers, since Dell seems to be trying to flog lots of stuff at present, and it may be (even!) cheaper than online... (But I doubt it).

well i would be using it for office apps , dont need printer , 40 gb hard drive is fine as i have external one, i would want it to be quite a good one though to play the odd not very demanding game.

What qualifies as "not very demanding" ?
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

There is always https://www.dell.co.uk/outlet click on Home use the drop down list on the right side of the next page to list "current inventory". They are machines which have been returned to dell for various reasons, could be they didn't meet specification or the person who ordered it couldn't afford it. They are refurbished and resold. Most of the bargains goto the power buyers here https://www.outletbargains.co.uk which is a forum where a lot of the ebay sellers are located. There is a mini forum where you can make a request and if one of the sellers sees something that matches your price range\specification they will point you to it. They may even reserve it in their basket for you and show you how to transfer it to you so that you can buy it. They are just middlemen, the systems come from dell or can be purchased from the individuals concerned and then the warranty transferred to you. Alternatively, there are sites such as http://www.quidco.com/ where you can register, then when a particularly good deal comes along. Purchase using their weblink and you get 5% cashback iirc.
