  • Well all the deals I have seen mainly only give minutes and a max of 100 texts, I send about 400-500 texts a month so these deals aren't much use to me, unless anyone knows otherwise

With so many free phone & line rental deals around (no costs within reasonble usage limits) surely most people are better off just taking up new deals every 12 months? If they like their old phone enough they could even pay about £10 to get it unlocked to accept the new sim card and immediately sell the new phone that comes with the deal. This revenue could even be offset against any additional charges they may incur during the next 12 months (say if on occasion they used more than the inclusive texts & calls allowance).
All very true. This is the model I follow personally and is what I recommend to those looking to spend as little as possible on a mobile contract.

However, I think the primary reason for negotiating an upgrade with retentions is that for the period of the next contract you will be dealing with the network alone. You will not have to go through the hassle and potential pitfalls of dealing with a third party retailer and claiming cashback. For some, the cost of a well negotiated upgrade outweighs this hassle.

Deals with 12 months free line rental and this number of SMS do exist but these are largely restricted to the 3 network. For example, you could get 400 SMS on Video Talk & Text 1100 with 12 months free line rental.

Both Cool New Mobile and Phonebox Direct offer the following deal. I am not going to post links as I personally don't recommend these retailers. The details are easy enough to find on their websites.

Handset: LG 8360 or Ministry of Sound MOS-1
Tariff: '3' Video, Talk and Text 1100 (600 mins, 400 SMS)
    Monthly cost: £45
Cashback deal: 12 months free line rental
