We have looked at both. Didn't mind one that needed doing up, not to the extent of structural work but cosmetic was ok.

Thing is we have had an offer accepted on a house that needs nothing doing to it. We will change it and had it been on the market for more, we would not have even looked at it.

Yet the ones that need modernising round here, the sellers seem to think that we should pay over the hilt for the priveledge of making their property liveable to modern standards.

Yet the one we are in the process of buying needs nothing doing to it and was very competitively priced, realistically they wanted to move quickly so priced it accordingly.

So my opinion is, depends on price....

A ‘move in and do nowt’ house would be decorated to some else's tastes. I also tend to feel these types of house have been 'property developed' and can't shake the feeling I'd be paying over the odds because someone's been watching property !!!!!!.

A fixer-up feels more satisfying, it'd be my home because I made it my home.
Agreed 100%. Funnily enough, how we’ve done the house isn’t to our taste at all. However, a lot of our viewers have openly said “fabulous, we don’t have to do anything immediately – that’s great”. In other words (I presume) they will in time put their own stamp on it, but it’s nice just to get on with life at the beginning of their ownership.

Did you mean to say property !!!!!!? I don’t think I’ve got that channel! :)

Martin calls it property !!!!!!. So I think that is what is meant. Don't worry it isn't on just one channel it seems to be on every one!

somewhere in between, personally im hoping to get somewhere that only really needs a lick of paint so it would be decorated to my tastes, however the chances of this is pretty slim but i can hope

Sorry forgot to say that I'd love to buy a house done entirely to my taste but I'm fussy. The reality is the house we're buying needs loads of work including structural to make the house work well for us. I do know however that when it's done it will be a fantastic house for us to live in for the next 6 years or so. The house we're moving from was the same.

Never yet bought one that was pristine. Is there any such thing? Generally the builders follow us through the front door.

IMHO it always costs far more to do the work than you think it will

I definitely agree but at at least you know it's been done right and it's your taste.

I would rather buy one that only needs cosmetic work (ie a lick of paint) but that's because I work full time & the thought of having builders etc in my house when I'm not there is not one I wish to entertain!

We moved straight in, having decided to change only the wallpaper & bathroom

    HA!

... after two days we decided we wanted a better boiler (old one was fine ... but old) .... decided to change rad locations while we were at it ... replaced most of the piping. Realised that the removal of old pipework boxing meant we needed to redo all the floors as well as the walls ... realised we want patio doors ... and a porch ... and a new kitchen .... maybe a full restructure of the upstairs bathroom (inc changing walls) /

There was nowt wrong with the house until we started living in it and felt the need to make it OURS!
