In our hallway we have a gold colour and it still looks great and is managing well with all the traffic it gets. However, it is one of those woven style things which does mean it doesn't look worn quickly.

    Thankyou for all the replies,
You have given me a lot to think about. Although i am still no nearer to deciding what to go for. At the moment we have seperate coloured carpet in the lounge than the hall, stair and landing. Our house is small so i thought one colour would give the illusion of space. I watch the house doctor and she always seems to choose light colours all the way through. We have already had plain red beautiful but a nightmare. Forever vacuumung it. Blue speckled was also good but for some reason faded. Pink was what we had down about 10 years ago. Not practical. I really do want beige. Still got another week to make up my mind. Thanks for all your advice. It is very much appreciated. At this rate i will be putting wooden flooring down.

I've got a small house too and we have the same honey coloured carpet throughout the entire house. It looked great for the first year but now, after 2 years, the hall is getting a little grubby and I can clearly see where we walk the most both downstairs and upstairs. The living room is ok but where feet go in front of the sofa it is also grubby.

We don't wear shoes in the house at all, the wear is purely from socks, bare feet and slippers.

If I could do it again I would still have the beige living room and bedroom carpets but I would have a slighly more practical carpet in the halls stairs and landing. Maybe still a neutral colour but with a mottle or simple pattern.

I toyed with the idea of laminate but I find that if 'bits' are on the floor they are picked up on bare feet and transferred to the carpet in other areas... hence why the entrance from the tiled floor in the kitchen to the carpet in the hall is particularly grubby.
Just run, run and keep on running!

we had a beige coloured carpet in our hall and lounge , it was one of the most expensive we have ever had , but i was a slave to the bleddy thing after 10 months and the exhaustion of keeping it clean i went back to laminate and would not swop for the world. we wanted light coloured floors as we only have a small bungalow , when we moved in the carpet was multi coloured, patterned, it definitley made rooms look smaller

If you don't have windows in the hallway then I wouldn't recommend a dark carpet. I live in a terraced house and the dark hallway is made worse by a dark carpet :(

Cream would be impractical because it dirties too easily.

    Perhaps something like this?
Beige wool. My brother has it & I think it cost him £20/m2 inc carpet, underlay, grips, delivery & fitting from Carpet Right (called new berber wool):

So gratefull to all who have replied. A big thankyou. Really struggling to decide. My OH says he is happy with whatever i choose. At the end of the day it will be me maintaining it. O if only they made a light coloured carpet that was completly stain resistant. Maybe i should make everyone walk in on their hands. Can't believe i am having so much trouble deciding. I thought the decorating was the hard part. Will let you all know when and if i ever decide.
    Thanks again

I have a mid blue carpet in one of the kid's rooms. It has speckles of colour in it and it's been great as you tend not to see stuff on it. Maybe it's the type of carpet it is. I have a navy carpet in one of the other rooms and it is a nightmare. I'll hoover and by then end of the day you see fluff off the socks. If I don't hoover for a few days you can see all the dust.

I wouldn't get a completely plain carpet again.

I also bought a big Bissel carpet cleaner with my mum and sister and we share it. It cost £210 but we only paid £70 each. About the same cost as 2 hires of a professional cleaner.

Plain dark carpets are a nightmare. They show every speckle of fluff (and I'm not sure where all the fluff comes from).

Well i went for cream in the end. Up to now i am so pleased with it. It makes the house look so much bigger. Had no problems with marks on it. I vacuum daily. It can be cleaned with bleach. Just hope it will still be ok when it is winter.

Well, you could try Flotex, but a lot of people don't like the finish on it. The other thing you could try is a contract 'gel back' carpet, the type used in nursing homes and other places that 'accidents' are likely to happen - they're washable because the gel back won't rot like a hessian back carpet can do. Also look for an 80/20 wool/nylon blend in a twist finish as that's the most hardwearing, with a fleck (known as a heather fleck) so stains aren't noticeable.
