What colour carpet.

Hi there everyone,
Just wanted some advice. We have recently redecorated our lounge, hall stairs and landing. Just wondered what colour carpet to have. I either want a beige/cream colour or a very practical dark green. I know a lot of people have beige. Just wondered if it was an easy colour to keep clean. Everyone says i will regret it. Any advice anyone. Please. Thanks

Any light colour is going to be more difficult to keep clean, particularly if there are animals or children about. How disciplined is the household in changing their outdoor shoes when they come in?

We went for a dark bluey grey which the Dds hate but any other colour would be wrecked.

I got a lovely beigey biscuity carpet in the lounge a couple of years ago and it does not look so good any more.

If you go for something a bit mottled rather than a plain colour then any small stains won't be so noticeable.

I would go for a darker colour. We had a beige/stone carpet, lovely and all that, but eventually the areas of heavy footfall got soo grubby that no amount of cleaning would remedy the situation. If the rest of the decor and furnishing are fairly plain, a small-pattern carpet will disguise the wear and tear and stains even more.

We have gone for a carpet that looks beige but when you get close it has flecks of green, blue, red and mauve. Sounds weird but it is very hard wearing and is water and stain repellant. It can even be washed with a mild bleach solution! It has been down for a year now in my three boy's rooms and it isn't marked and they don't take their shoes off at the front door.
    I would if I could but I can't so I won't!

I wouldn't recommend beige. Total nightmare, especially if you have children or animals. Dark colours can often be surpisingly difficult too. I agree with some of the other posters that suggest flecked or slightly patterned carpet. If you have a couple of shades or colours it will help to hide things if you do have a stain you can't get out. If your heart is set on a very pale carpet is it possible to get it treated with something like scotchguard?
  • We had a dark green carpet on our stairs and I was forever hoovering it. True, stains are less likely to show but every tiny piece of dust and fluff is visible so unless you hoover it every day it will look dirty. Lighter carpets do not show up fluff so much but will look grubby if you walk on them with outdoor shoes. We have a light ribbed carpet downstairs which -like Tagz - has flecks in it. We all take our shoes off as soon as we come in the front door and most visitors offer to take their shoes off anyway. I would never go for a dark carpet again.
  • I would avoid beige or cream. We have a colour called "warm honey" for our stairs and landing, but I can't remember which brand it is! It's been down just over a year now and is doing very well, doesn't show dirt or fluff too much. I googled Wilton carpets (only brand I could think of at the moment) and if you look on the page for Plain Carpets at their Arundel Twist carpet, I would say our colour is similar to their Harvest.

  • I've had my beige carpet down in my living room now for nearly six years and although it doesn't look brand new, it still looks very good. It's all down to no kids, no pets and making sure everyone takes their shoes off when they come in!! I would certainly have another light carpet :D

Hi, I was given a tip from a carpet fitter once that I have found useful. The amount of foot traffic/wear that you are likely to have in your hall versus lounge versus stairs is likely to be different. Although putting one matching carpet down does look great when you first do it, they will wear at different rates so what do you do to replace them? If you put down different patterns or grades to match the expected foot traffic you will get more out off the carpets long term.

Also I have learned from bitter experience any self coloured carpet shows the "bits" like mad so totally agree with the advice to go for a mottled look to the carpet.
