I use my PC and fax modem and by adding 1899 before the number (you must subscribe to 1899), then it is only 1P/minute to France (almost free).
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

so XP fax doesn't work on broadband? why not? tried and it kept removing the intl dialing code prefix.
post to France from the UK can take a week btw.
found it better than struggling with possibly insecure fax sites on the internet to get a scanner and use pdf files. Most people accept them in lieu of faxes. Only drawback is that they also have to have a scanner or you can't get them back.

how do you send a pdf if, as the op says, the recipient doesn't have e-mail?

Because fax data is transmitted using audible tones similar to those used by a dial-up modem. There is no such thing as broadband fax.

The same as any other document: by installing Windows Fax Services (see post #4) and using a dial-up modem. Windows Fax appears as a printer and any document can be opened and 'printed' to the fax printer.

I think mikemoat was posting in response to pigeonpie's suggestion on using pdf's instead of a fax.

Thanks I did actually know that but in the post I was replying to the poster had also referred to not being able to use broadband to send fax and to use pdf as an alternative. I don't have a modem and wondered if there was any other way in these circumstances other than e-mail of sending something electronically. I am assuming as the recipient hasn't an e-mail address they don't have internet access and therefore couldn't be pointed to a web page. Thanks for the advice any way.

  • Thanks for all your advice. In the end, because I have broadband and found this means I can't use the windows fax service, I opted for the efax.com trial - successfully sent my fax and guess what - when the reply came it had a bloomin email address on it!!!!!

Broadband does not preclude you using Windows Fax. They are independent of each other.

If the PC has only ever been used with broadband, then it is possible that no modem is installed, so this may be a reason. They cost about £10.

Use this for outgoing ones, and a free fax-to-email service to receive
