  • Nikki, his quals and aptitudes will dictate what he can and cannot do in all 3 services, and I would suspect that if he has nothing, the technical (and therefore better paid) trades may be out of his reach.

Discilpine is part of all three services, and those that cannot handle it do invariabley fall by the wayside. However, after 12 yrs in, not being sure what to do with my life and joining simply to find a job, plus having taken the opportunity to jump ship and commission, one can get as much out of the forces as one puts in.

However, for the last 6 or so yrs, the adage that the forces is an easy job is out the window, and ALL trades of ALL 3 services are working in some crappy places in the middle east - not just the preserve of the infanteer (although they are still by far the facing the tougher OOA tours).

Basic Trg is difficult, and stressful, and does require the individual to do things for himself. Long gone will be the days of lazing in bed until late moning, early afternoon - it will be weeks of getting by on 2 hrs or less sleep every night followed by some quite physical work in the day! Good times, Good times!!
Best way for you to prepare him is to empower him in how he looks after himself, and believe it or not that should involve making him wash and iron his own clothes - that way it may not be such a culture shock when a hairy arsed Cpl is throwing his uniform out the window because there is a slight tramline in a shirt sleeve!!!

My husband is an AMM and has been in for 3.5yrs, we are at cosford at the moment as he is doing his 13month A Tech M course (Phase 3 training).
You have to have maths and science GCSE to join as AMM and from looking at hubbys work he has been doing (and homework) it is not easy. There is a lot of complex maths and particually physics involved.
Might not be the best option if not academically minded.

Although I agree in principle.. nice work if you can get it (Just not on tornadoes!!!)

    xx

that is good advice, however if you can apply yourself and learn the stuff you can pass it easy enough. the tutors will always help.

I joined the raf 9 years ago through the SAC (T) route and had left school 6 years previously - i had to re-learn most of the maths and physics stuff but did and passed it easily.

if i had my time again i would still join the RAF.

there is nowt wrong with tornado's it's just that if you get marham on tonka's then it is poo squared.
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

Clever, if it's on a rope you can retrieve it wherever it gets to.
