When i was in the ATC an officer told me this...
Join the Army....Officers lead the men into battle,
Join the Navy....You fight with the officers,
Join the Air Force....The officers do all the fighting!!!
Made us chuckle
pretty much summed it all up there.
i told you it was the thinking mans forceYou got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.0 -

I would go RAF AMM, live in hotels, lots of cash and not alot of hard work.
As someone who joined up as one of the first AMM's 5 years ago, i can tell you that you'd be better off money wise joining a so called lesser trade, eg admin. (quicker promotion). Ive been in 5 years and spent 5 weeks in a hotel and 11 weeks in afghanistan so someones yanking your chain if you think you'll be living it up in 5* accomodation. And the "not a lot of hard work" is laughable, sure we have easy weeks, but we also have very long stressfull weeks at times. Sorry for drifting off topic.
The air force would be a lot better than the navy, certain trades in the navy have really poor retention rates/low morale, theres plenty of jobs your son could do in the RAF/navy without gcse's, i think admin might require no gcse's (but i might be wrong on that one).0 -
i wanted to make a joke about seaman for the pros of joinging the navy but couldnt think of anything appropriate
i think your son should go for it and forget what crap his friends have said they are just jealous

RAF - Civvy in uniform except for RAF Regiment. In terms of stability and opportunities to serve in shore posts all around the world, probably the one to go for. If I had my time again, and purely from a domestic perspective I would choose the RAF, much more stable
Yeah right - Sounds like the sort of thing a Rock Ape would say!
Horses for courses, all depends on what he wants to do and will find rewarding. There are up and down sides to all services and the trades/branches within them. Even the RAF Regiment - however the positives escape me for now0 -
I would recommend joining as an AMM, complete the 3 years, return to cosford then serve out the 9 years.
Hope to get posted to VC10, Tristar, E3-D, C130 J or K's In the final 2-3years work on your JAR 66 to leave the service. Other ideals are to get posted to Sentinel and complete civil licenses through Barry College.
That would be the best option out of it all.
20yrs old as Nothing to Basic Licensed Engineer within 10years.
Probably the best of out all the trades to be earning £30-40k a year upon leaving the service.0 -

Their pre-para course is much easier than the real one for a start :rotfl:
You can go SFSG or SRR or maybe even SAS if you are good enough. There is one Rockape in SFSG in Afghanistan just now who is a legend. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

My husband is an AMM and has been in for 3.5yrs, we are at cosford at the moment as he is doing his 13month A Tech M course (Phase 3 training).
You have to have maths and science GCSE to join as AMM and from looking at hubbys work he has been doing (and homework) it is not easy. There is a lot of complex maths and particually physics involved.
Might not be the best option if not academically minded.
Although I agree in principle.. nice work if you can get it (Just not on tornadoes!!!)
