my son has just bought himself a nokia 5530, i've noticed it had wlan in the connectivity settings, i've put our router details in etc... but i'm still in doubt about it, i'm thinking is it using our home internet or his mobile (which would have to be paid for) i can't find any info on it..the 5800 has something in the settings as to which settings you want to use

ie always ask..or only use wlan etc...

any info would be greatly appreciated,,

Select always ask, so he can select to use home wifi.

Taking this picture as an example:

    5800-custom-operamini-icon2.jpg

See where it shows 'E' and the two lines? That means it's using the networks internet (and probably being charged), on the 5530 if it shows these two lines with with a 'Y' shaped antenna or an 'E' then your not using home wifi.

Wifi has it's OWN icon and it looks like an antenna with 3 (very) small lines on either side - and if you have a password for your router will show a padlock next to it.

However when receiving or sending MMS the phone does connect to the network - so you need to watch out for that.

thanks rash.m2k, RE- the 'always ask' comment that has it on the 5800 but i cannot find it on the 5530, i've just checked his online bill and he has some charges for wap and no charges for mobile.o2.co.uk, so i think we might have sussed it.initially he clicked on the globe to connect which i said i didnt think that was the way so we went into the wlan settings (already put in ssid and encrytion) and clicked connect via that way i think that's way it connects to mobile.o2.co.uk , i'll keep checking the bill though ;)

info appreciated rash i'm also gonna check the screen for the signal lines :T

the way you find out is when you are connected to the internet, if below the signal bar is shhowing a reversible arrow like shown in the above picture that means the internet is using the network for access, if that does not show then you are using wifi.
an alternative way is to connect to the internet for 5mins and then exit and then check whether the network has charged you for usage.

You need to go into the web browser - and click options -> settings -> general -> access point and set it to 'Always ask'

Any other application that wants to access the internet (such as email, Gmail etc. etc.) you must also find the settings for them and change that to always ask.

Also if you go into phone Settings -> Connectivity -> Destinations you can create new destinations and move exsiting access points around. Destinations is a stupid name by Nokia - but they are just groups of access points bundle together, create one called wifi and move your router settings into this destination - you can then set this destination as the Default Connection so anything you haven't set to 'Always Ask' will automatically connect to wifi (i.e the Default Destination - it should have a little tick next to it once you set it as Default)

Also goto Log -> Packet Data and send/received data should not change as it ONLY changes when you connect to the network. but not over wifi.

You might have to wait til they sort the settings out. CPW won't be able to do much I think.

You can either enter them youself by looking them up on the internet, or goto the o2 website and have them send them to you here:

    http://getsettings.o2.co.uk/ServeSettingsWebApp/

just enter 5800, CPW don't have a clue what they are doing especially instore.

    It should work.

    OR send ACTIVE to 2020
