It wont be the VGA cable either (you'd still have a standby light).
It's more than likely the power supply, which is normally mounted inside a metal case on the back the LCD as you open the outer case. Id place money on it being the electrolytic capacitors in the PSU, bulging or leaking (look them up on google). But you'll need soldering skills to replace them.
Can I ask? do you turn the PC off at the mains after use (after shutdown)? power supplies for PCs/Monitors really hate this on/off power cycling, as the "inrush current" can damage them eventually given time.
No it doesn't get turned off at the mains. The reason I think it is the button is that it no longer makes the clicking sound when we press it like it used to for some reason.
She is going to collect a 2nd hand one from Gumtree tonight so hopefully that'll work fine
