Monitor Problem

Hoping someone can help but not sure anyone can.

My mum tried to switch on her computer today to find that her monitor isn't working anymore. It just has a completely blank screen and no light where there should be one. The button is unable to press in even. The computer sounds to be going on as normal although obviously we can't check this.

Is there anything we can do or is it a case of having to get a new one?

Thanks :)

Check cables, borrow another monitor cable and try it, borrow another monitor and try that. Try your mum's monitor on another computer. Do the simple stuff first before spending anything.

We don't have another computer, or monitor :(

I have a laptop unfortunately. Thanks though.

    not stalking you :D

When m lappy screen went blank I plugged it into the upstairs PC so that I was using the laptop thru the PC, after a few days the laptop screen worked again

Just a thought but might this not work in reverse????

You 2 are having a fair old time with your computers:D

    Proved you wrong..

Most laptops have a "monitor" socket on the side. Plug in the faulty monitor to this. Having done that you may need to press a function key (F1-F12) on the laptop to switch the video to the secondardy screen. Locate the Fn fey press and hold the F4 key or the key with a square in it.

However to me it just sounds the that power switch has jammed/stuck. Easy fix, but flat screen monitors are cheap now.

Thank you :) we switched the screen from my laptop to the monitor but yep, I think you're right and it's the power button :(

My mum is taking it to bits right now :rotfl:

If it's a CRT monitor, they can store up quite high voltages, so I'd advise against trying to take it apart unless your mother knows what she's doing.

It's an LCD, we got it open but it's like a circuit board for the buttons at the front rather than a normal button so I reckon it's for the bucket :(

Things to check are obviously the power lead (swap it with the PC power lead).

    It won't be the button.....

It wont be the VGA cable either (you'd still have a standby light).

It's more than likely the power supply, which is normally mounted inside a metal case on the back the LCD as you open the outer case. Id place money on it being the electrolytic capacitors in the PSU, bulging or leaking (look them up on google). But you'll need soldering skills to replace them.

Can I ask? do you turn the PC off at the mains after use (after shutdown)? power supplies for PCs/Monitors really hate this on/off power cycling, as the "inrush current" can damage them eventually given time.
