Is there any other way I can connect some decent speakers without the cost and space of extra dvd/amp unit?

Yes, you need active speakers such as these.

Those particular ones won't be amazing, but they'll be a lot better than the sound coming from your TV's speakers, they're relatively unobtrusive, and they're pretty cheap.

If you have more to spend, you can of course get something better.

You do have the sound on the PC turned up? (the icon next to the time in the bottom right corner).

Thanks all. Checked out the link posted.

I already have a set of decent PC speakers (3.1) but I didn't think of using them as the cables from speaker to subwoofer aren't really that long enough to stretch to corners of room. I've just tested sound and it's much better.

I'll have a search on eBay to see if there's any extension cable for the RCA style connections.

Younger bro just turned up home with the T.V one day. It was 2nd hand and a bargain... and an upgrade from our last TV. But you do get what you pay for I suppose
