Hi
Please could some one give me some advice, I purchased a Tom Tom on 20 July 2009 from Currys in Chorley Lancs. I have only used it twice the second time i used it i tapped the screen and it cracked! Before you ask no i am not Clark kent! I went back to the store yesterday with the TomTom and my receipt .The guy in the customer services said there was nothing they could do .He told me that I would have to contact Tom Tom take it up with them and ask them to repair it. Do you think this advice is correct and reasonable or should have Currys replaced the Tom Tom. Any advice would be most welome.
Thanks

Difficult to argue that a cracked screen is a fault, when the crack occurred when you tapped it.
How hard did you 'tap' the screen and what with?
Have you had the TomTom in a bag, without having a case on it at all? It is possible that the screen has been impacted by something without you realising.
Your best bet is either TomTom themselves or, do you have 'gadget insurance' through your bank account (eg Barclays Additions type) or similar?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I would say your contract is with Currys and it is their reponsibility to sort it out.
They should, at the least, return it to TomTom on your behalf.0 -
contract is with Currys....tapping a screen is how a TT works....I would assume its a fault in the TT...the screens are made from pretty tough stuff....meantime....fire a letter off to TT and explain the problem...they may advise you to go back to Currys....in which case you have proof why you're back in their store...lol...other scenario is TT replace it themselves....
BTW Ive never come across that problem with TT screens....you didn't drop it ?....can be a problem when the suction mount gives way and it drops on the floor or your gearstick...google for the problem.......I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:0 -
Sorry...20th July 2009?
Take a look in the receipt wallet or on the back of the receipt about faulty products within 28 days. Best get there before Wednesday though. Also get them to show you the page on the database which suggests what to do with the item between 1 and 28 days from purchase....
Assuming it's not down to misuse (and it's up to them to prove it was), they'll exchange it for you within the first 4 weeksSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
At work we tried to break a TT screen. They are very tough, it took 3 good smacks on the corner of a worktop to crack it. I don't think we ever had one returned with a faulty cracked screen, only accidental damage.
The retailer should return it to TT, TT will pick up the cost of the return and they will report back what they consider to be the cause.0 -
Thanks everyone for your advice0

Ah the old old old old old thing of "you have to talk to the manufacturer" as far as you are concerned the manufacturer does not exist your only contract is with Currys. It's up to them to sort it out.0 -
This customer service sounds about right for currys, last year i bought a freeview box that Currys asured me would work in in area. I only managed to pick up a few channels so i returned it to Currys who refused to take the product back and refund me.
I called Currys complaints line who advised me that Currys needed the money more than i did and blamed me for opening the box because if they took it back they were unable to resell it.
Eventually i had to settle for store credit as they totally refused to return any money. I will never shop at Currys again.
Good Luck!!0 -

So it worked then. I'm not suprised they refused to refund you.
Freeview boxes will receive the signal that is available, which depends on exactly where your house is, what the surrounding area is like and the quality and installation of your aerial.
None of these are under the control or responsibility of Currys, nor should they be!!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
It worked fine but i was asured by curry that coverage was fine in my area. I had bought a sport package with the box but didnt pick up the channel i was paying for.
I can understand Currys point that it worked but they shouldnt advise coverage would be fine if they cant be sure of this. maybe that should make customers more aware of the risks of this.
I think it is the customer service that bothered me the most getting pasted around diffrent parts of the company rather than the store dealing with customer issues.0
