advice on gloves

Hi, i have just aquired an allotment (yipee) but like many others who have posted on here it is covered in 6 foot brambles. Want to make a start on it tomorrow, (picking the berries first of course). Think i'm going to approach it by cutting it down, digging up the roots and maybe using a some kind of chemical on the roots if need be. Anyway going off the point - my question. Need to buy some gloves. Thinking some kind of heavy duty guantlet thingys. Funny enough have never bought anything like this before. Any ideas on where i can buy them? Cheaply if possible? What is the best type to get for attacking brambles? What material should they be made of?
Thanks in advance
Sarah

Wilkinson's do gloves, but it is a false economy to buy cheaply, as you end up with rubbish gloves and hands filled with thorns. Better to buy a pair of Ironstone type leather gauntlets or gloves. You want protection on the palms to be thick leather/hide, and across the knuckles, but cloth on the backs so that you can move your hands freely, without rubbing or chaffing, as a long day weeding becomes very painful and difficult to grasp at the weeds. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

Thanks again guys. Focus seems to have leather gloves that specifically say they are useful for protection against thorns. £7.99. What do you think? Am i right in thinking not too expensive but not too cheap either?0

I was cutting out brambles today with some rigger's gloves, like these:

I expected to get a few thorns through them, but no.0 -
I would buy cheap
The cheap rigger gloves or something that is used in the buildingtrade will last long enough to clear an allotment. Then buy some expensive gloves that are more supple and can be worn with comfort.
£7.99 too expensive , buy below £4 and then treat yourself to a really nice expensive pair.
( reward for clearing the brambles)0 -
I would agree with Dave. I usually look for gloves in the men's section. Ladies' gloves tend to be poncey little cotton things with flowers on. The best pair I ever had were sold by the RHS and were cotton sprayed with a thick but flexible plastic coating.0

Thanks Dave. Want to make a start tomorrow so don't want to order online. Just found a pair identical on the Homebase website £2.99, Your link was very useful in goving me an idea of what to look for. Thanks0

A pair of welding gloves will do the job, and protect your arms! We used them to clear our garden0
