I always ask for my left overs to be wrapped up esp if its meat.

I cant phyiscally eat an adult size portion of food due to medical reasons so i always have food left over and have never been refused a doggy bag. I wouldnt however do this in a serve yourself kind of buffet place as really you are in control of your own portion size.

One of my friends worked in a buffet style carvary and they had also banned doggy bags. This was due to people taking more than they wanted to eat and then going back for another full plate then asking for a doggy bag to take a full plate of food home. So basically for the price of a lunch they were trying to take enough food home for another two meals!

For the actions of a few people, everyone ended up losing out.

I was about to say the same thing.
If it is a help yourself carvery (or buffet) then people would just take extra and then take it home with them.
Don't overfill your plate unless you are sure you can eat it all next time, that will reduce the waste problem as effectively as you trying to take some home with you!

  • A few years ago when i got married, a couple of old ladies turned up at the end of the night with plastic boxes to take away what was left of our buffet - they werent' even guests - that is perhaps their weekly social event - thought it took some nerve!

I'm not sure if I am impressed by their cheek or thinking how DARE they! sorry.gif

We must have really mingy carveries where I live - the two nearest me are one plate only and they plate up your meat for you. One of them even has a limit on stuffing balls and roasties - rubbish if you want the carvery without the meat :(

  • I was talking about this with my OH an hour or so ago. I said we had better take a bag with us when we go for a meal with my MIL. She can't eat a big meal and always takes the left overs home with her.

It is a wonder she hasn't made herself ill. When we went on holiday with her we had a meal one lunchtime. She scraped all the remainder of her salad including coleslaw made with mayonaise into an old carrier bag. It went into her handbag and was carried round all afternoon-a fairly warm day-and then she ate it for her tea.

I am all for taking left overs home but think it is sensible to put it into the fridge as soon as possible, especially when you are nearly 90 like my MIL is.:D

OH and I regularly take his elderly mother out to lunch on a Saturday. She likes to go the Harvester chain of restaurants. Having had stomach cancer (and losing over half of it ) she can't eat a full portion so usually takes any meat she can't manage home with her. After all, we've paid for it so, as far as I'm concerned, it's ours to do what we want with it.

Last time we went in some young jobsworth manager tried to get her to sign a disclaimer . She looked him up and down and said "Young man, I grew up without owning a fridge, freezer, microwave or any other gadgets. I grew up with rationing, austerity, frugality and making do - and I have managed to get to 84 years old knowing exactly how to heat up a bit of left over meat, thank you very much!!" :T:T:T

He was so gob-smacked that we were able to walk out of there without signing anything - and MIL determindly clutching her left over chicken portion. :D

It's absolutely bloody ridiculous  - as others have said, even in America they have no problem providing you with a doggy bag, so why here?
