Why not a refund?

Options
Today I brought a bike product back to the store as I had purchased the wrong size - my fault I admit. According to the receipt I can return this within 14 days and I have done so with 4!! The assistant said that they dont do refunds and have a policy in the top corner of the shop front saying that "Goods may be exchanged where a receipt is shown and the product has not been used, and its within the 14 day period". She is saying that they dont do refunds and that I am obligated to either buy something of the same value or take a credit note (Note she refused to call it this and said that the money would remain on my "account", even though I paid in Cash). So after telling her this wasnt legal she said it was the store's policy and I had no other choice.
Plus I only have 3 months to use the CN!

Now I have the strangest feeling that there was something on the news recently about this. Firstly, why cant i get the cash? Secondly, was the timescale on the Credit not recently abolished so you could keep it as long as you wanted?

TIA Experts!

As you have just made a mistake they are not obliged to refund, but they do allow you to exchange.

The receipt was simply saying you could return it for an exchange,it never said you were entitled to a refund .They are well within the law.Jd Sports by any chance?

By law they don't even have to give you an exchange or a credit note.

No its not a sports clothing store. Its a specialist bicycle shop and its local so you might not heard of it.
I just think thats a bit crummy. I have known them in the past to charge people for work on their bikes, which wasnt even done. Or done extra that wasnt required and demand payment. Just not wanting to succum to the fact I am obligated to spend my money there now. I should be free to choose any consumer I like.
  • Out of interest, why didn't you just exchange the product with them for the right size? Presumably you still need the item?

They didnt sell the item I needed (it was a tyre) in the correct size and so I had to go and buy it from somewhere else. Therefore I no longer need this wrongly sized tyre.

Yeah I agree it was my error. Just seems like im being harshly punished for it now. Seems like the same policy would apply if your granny bought you a cycling helmet instead of a motorbike helment, no? What is a motorbike rider going to do with a credit note for a bike shop?
