Faulty Item - Reasonable time to report item faulty

Hi,
I sold a turntable on ebay on 12/7/09. It is a 30 year old model. I tested it personally before packaging it up in a heavy duty box with lots of protection.
It was sent via DHL (insured).
Yesterday, the buyer got in touch to say he had just unpacked it and had found it does not work at all.
If he had gotten in touch within days of delivery saying it didn't work i would quite happily have asked him to return it for a refund but a month later? It's a 30 year old piece of equipment and could easily develop a fault through normal use in that time - but i guess equally it could get broken in transit.
Personally, if i buy anything from mail order i test it as soon as i receive it.
I have only sold a couple of items on ebay so not sure what to. What would you do?

The buyer has 45 days to lodge a paypal claim0

IMHO your only option is to tell buyer to return item at their cost (and they'll need to use a trackable service to follow Paypal rules) for inspection and refund if it is indeed faulty. Then you'd need to try a claim off DHL if there is damaging to the packaging etc.
TBH, after 30 years I'd think it quite likely that motor/bearing/pulley could fall to bits in transit as box is heaved up-side down into the van.0 -
claims to DHL must be lodged within 30 days so that is no longer an option.
The person has also since moved house. I suspect it may have been damaged during the move. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
They have 45 days to file a claim with paypal (assuming they paid with paypal), paypal will tell them to return it to you for a refund.0

I would see if its cheaper for them to repair the item and see if you can go halves on fixing it. They may prefer that than having to pay to return it. I have no idea how much these things cost to repair but its just an idea.0
