    There surprisingly hard to break.

    and recoverable even if smashed

does shreded bank statements etc stop identity theft?....no

so broken hard drives are in the same catagory, much harder to retrive but if you have takes the effort to take it apart and smash it theres something on there probably spending the time salvaging to a criminal.

its even possible with ALOT of skill to recover portions of data even when using a magnet, however unless your a millionaire or have milkitary data on there nobody will be interested enough

personally i took mine apart, burnt the platters(disk things inside) with a lighter to the point where they bubbble then smashed them and finally used industrial strength magnets just in case

some may call it over worried but it had bank details and lots of other stuff i dont want people to get there hands on

after all our tip has been known to just take the computers and resell them straight away.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

You can always turn an old hard drive into an external one. Costs about £20 to do and very easy

I tend to just bash HD with a lump hammer (make sure you wear goggles) then take it to tip or bin it if its just HD

I got fed up of getting rid of old pcs' too many people want latest thing, as soon as you say its got a crt they dont want it

Just run DBAN on the drive, once over with the quick command is enough to destroy data 100%

One pass is enough to destroy data way beyond the point of recovery
