I've spent the morning clearing out the garage and I've got an old PC tower to take to the local tip. In order to make residual data safe from theft, what do I need to remove (or smash) before I take it?
I've got the casing off and I'm looking at load of innards that mean nothing to me. Please could you tell what I need take out? and please tell me what I'm looking for as I know there is a motherboard and processor in there but I have no idea what they look like!

Thanks

  • If you don't want the whole thing you could have offered it on your local Freecycle (things like that seem to be taken pretty quick)...

Thanks Charley3 I did consider it but I'm concerned about residual data (bank details, log on IDs etc.) that could be recovered by someone who knows what they are doing (not me!!) and used for other purposes. So I need to remove or smash something to prevent it happening.

    Hi
If you're definitely just going to scrap the computer then it's the hard disk drive that you should remove.
Then smash it into little pieces if you wish.
It probably looks something like this here:-

See post here about cleaning residual data.

remove and destroy the Hard Disc Drive for total security. See "How to" video here (or just gooogle for "remove HDD"

Just get your hammer and smash it to pieces. The whole lot. This will make you feel like you are getting revenge from all the times it crashed on you.

Guess I'm not that violent. Last one I took apart in stageas and used a VERY strong magnet along the platters.

  • Why smash a perfectly working hard drive? Hardly MSE or eco friendly

    Use this, Eraser: http://eraser.heidi.ie/

    Then Freecycle it...
