Freshers Week

My son has just received the pack on Freshers week. It recommends buying a Freshers ticket at a cost of £50 for access to all that is on during 'Freshers' week or risking getting only tickets at the time for the things he wants to do? It states that it will be a substanitial saving and guarentees his admission.
Are these passes really worth it?
I thought (in my ignorance) that 'Freshers' week was all about going out and about and generally getting peed I did not realise there were adission costs for various things?

Hi,
Generally some events are free, some aren't- i.e. freshers ball, club nights etc.
I think the worth of these types of tickets is relative to what kind of person your son is - if he's going to want to go to these types of big events. it probably will be. But if he's more a chat with people in the pub kind of guy, maybe not.
Might be a good idea to pop over to https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk and post this message in your son's university forum (there are forums for each UK university on there )

Thank you so much for this link will get my son to log on to this. I have had a look at the forum for his uni and there are peeps discussing where their specific flats are etc. Great site.....ta much!0 -
You may want to check on general noticesnews of uni web sites as I believe that freshers week may be cancelled in some unis due to the threat from swine flu.0

I've never bought these tickets, neither when I was a Fresher at 19, nor as a mature Refresher at 24. Partly because most of the Freshers events covered by the tickets are for events I wouldn't attend anyway and partly because you never know what you'll want to do when you get there. I've always found that I have been able to buy tickets when I arrive for the events I want to go to.
You are right in that there is a lot going on during Freshers Week which don't require entry fee - most University Halls run social events, and if you're attending a city university most of the nightclubs etc... in the city will also have load of offers to entice new students to go to them. As Taurn says, it really depends on what kind of person your son is.0 -

Surely not!
They will be mixing at some point!
I did not think until reading the student forum, he may not get into some places or the pass might make it obvious that he is only 17 and despite the fact, I fully appreciate he should NOT be drinking, he will and I know if I was 17 again I would too.....:beer:0 -
My uni (York) did a college-specific version of this that got you into an all blocks club night in town, a city bar crawl with another college, a fancy dress/clubbing event on campus and a few other things on campus like the college quiz night and karaoke night, as well as some free drinks vouchers and a T-shirt for the bar crawl where you wrote on it your name, which college and block you were in and what subject you did to act as an aid for meeting people. Tickets to Freshers' Ball etc were separate.
The events were good and I would probably get the ticket again (it was about £20 or so I think), but as others have said it depends on what your son's like. Is there any information on what the tickets cost separately, on the students union website say?"A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
Sunderland (my Uni) does something similar, last year it was £35 i think, with a few things in a pack as well as admission to all the freshers events... from the people i spoke to, if you go out a bit it's worth it but obviously if you dont like the look of the events there's little point..On the up

I think firstly it might depend where the uni is - I study in Manchester, and in a big city with 3 universities there is so much to choose from on freshers week - tickets were required on big club nights, but you could purchase individual event tickets, and in the main the events put on by the actual uni were a letdown (ie. freshers ball)
£50 does sound like alot, but it really depends what the uni is putting on for the students, and I know some campus unis like Warwick have quite a uni-based social scene - so I'd just look into the pack in detail and see if there's much he'd like to go for! And again, if it's a more campus based uni, it depends on the options available for socialising outside these events!0 -
Unless he is going to all the big events (freshers ball, etc etc) it probably isnt going to be worth it. Also check what events are included, as events run in halls/colleges/the students union maybe all run by different organisations. But this all varies on the university and its structure.0

I'd reccomend buying it and going to every single event, it's the best way to meet loads of new people and get drunk n party while you're doing it. Worth every penny. The size of a glory hole in an open pit should not be greater than the cross-section of the haul trucks that dump into it. Otherwise, you are bound to lose a truck, sooner or later.
