I would say it's worth it. Most of the events are to help students settle and make friends, you can't put a price on that!

If he'll only be 17 at the start of term, he will probably be given a special wristband so that campus / SU bars are aware of his age. He needs to be aware of this as it might affect the events he goes to (no point in buying an expensive drinks-included Freshers' Ball ticket if they won't give you the drinks)!

Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

I found the opposite welf_man, one of my friends at uni was 17 in freshers week and they managed to get into places fine for freshers week only.

I work for a Students' Union and we're given a list of under-18s by the University, to ensure we don't sell them alcohol in our bar - it's taken very seriously as we could lose the licence if we don't take precautions when we know there are under-age students about.

It's not so that they can't get in, as obviously Freshers' events are important for younger students too, but to make sure they (and we!) are safe.

I bought loads of tickets for freshers week events when I started uni, and went to none of them. I spent most of my freshers week getting drunk with my flatmates, which I found much more helpful than going out to the freshers events on my own.

I was the complete opposite to mellymeep and i went to all of the freshers events but had to fork out slightly more to buy tickets on the door. It's a good job they weren't sold out!
