seems that there are problems today, certainly with call1899 - as their web site says "Due to a technical upgrade of the 1899 service you might experience some problems today when using 1899

    We apologize for any inconvenience!"

Looking at 18185 and 18866 they are all showing the same upgrade message on their sites!!

By inconvenience I wonder if they mean a total inability to make a call all day!!

I thought my orchid had gone doolally!!

Recommendation 1 - consider broadband and telephony separately.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Recommendation 2 - consider TV separately also. e.g. would Freeview meet your needs.

The best options will depend on your personal priorities and needs. Do you need high speed unlimited bandwidth broadband? Are you a high phone user and what is your calling pattern? What TV channels do you want? Do you want high reliability and/or good cucstomer service.

  • Hi there, I'm new to all this so sorry if this has been asked before, but I am considering moving from BT to TalkTalk but I am a bit anxious about doing so. The Ts and Cs about TalkTalk say that broadband is free for 6 months with no extra charge thereafter - surely this is the same as being free - or am I missing something?

My other choice is to use Sky broadband (I am already a Sky customer) but I do find all the different packages a bit confusing! I'd welcome any advice on this!
    Thanks

Welcome to the MSE forums stakkalee.

With regard to Talk Talk - have a read of THIS THREAD before you decide.

My daughter has gone for the Sky broadband thing but has upgraded the telephony part from the standard (free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls) Sky Talk Freetime to the £5/month Sky Talk Unlimited CPS package.

She has had no problems (it's a CPS service so she still uses her Orchid to, amongst other variations, route her calls to UK mobiles via 18185, her calls to Spanish mobiles via 18866 and her 0844 calls via BT).

My daughter also has gone for Sky broadband on the basic version so no additional cost over and above her existing Sky TV package. However, she like ourselves use Talk Talk CPS for telephony as do several of the people she phones often. So the majority of calls are free 24/7. Other calls are made using 18185 or 1899 so our combined landline phone bills are much less than the £5 per month for the Sky Talk Unlimited package. Depends on your call pattern of course.

I hope that you can assist - I am looking at the optoins for my parents - they have a BT line and we currently use an Orchid box to route calls through 18185 and 1899. I see that on Uswitch they have Primus 1 at £1.25 per month but refunding £5 per quarter - free evening and weekend calls, 60 mins calls (then redial). Is this the Primus 2 equivalent that Heinz discusses in his plan?

Also, with BT and a CPS provider like Primus, will this mess up the broadband connection (AOL)? UPDATE - just noticed that AOL also have a free evening and weekend calls package, currently free for 12 months - this may be an easier option.

    Many thanks

CPS your calls to another supplier does not affect your broadband service.
Personally i would stick to Heinz plan.

If you're going via Quidco to get to the uSwitch site in order to get the £16 Quidco cashback, do it again - but this time make some changes at Step 3 and the real Primus Saver Option 2 will be offered. The changes to make are - click 'Edit your phone usage' in the 'Step 3: Your results' page; zero all minutes, then type 50min in the local & national 'Evening minutes' & 'Weekend minutes' boxes.

OTOH, if the £16 is not the issue, just call Primus direct and be very specific about the package you want to sign up for - Primus Saver Option 2. That gives free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls of up to 90 minutes. Don't even mention use of 1899/18185 because Primus are assuming you'll use them for your other calls - that's how they hope to make money from you!
