They're lagging these days and the latest models are expensive and not that great

    danny1978uk,

I described that as the optimum solution (which it is) but, fundamentally, it's a question of the degree of sophistication you want, the sophistication of the rest of your kit and the degree to which you want to future-proof yourself.

But, if nothing else, I'd certainly want a router with Gigabit ports for its Ethernet.

Since you've already bought a wireless (?) router, why don't you now simply purchase a modem (such as the Vigor 120, or something cheaper) and apply the two in conjunction?

Post a link to the item you bought on eBay so that those here who would help you can see what it is.

Does your desktop computer have an Ethernet port or are you currently restricted to USB?

Fair enough: why didn't you make that clear and post the Belkin links initially for the OP?

It's absurd to state that the Draytek 2820 "is very expensive and the performance is also poor." Read this, for example.

Trusted Reviews says of it, here, "DrayTek's broadband routers have traditionally offered more for your money than most competing products and the latest Vigor2820n continues this tradition with a range of features that belies its modest price tag."

Its citation for the PC Pro Awards (which it won for the second year running, in September 2008) reads. "DrayTek wins this accolade for the second year in a row courtesy of excellent feedback from PC Pro readers in every area. It topped our charts for speed, range and reliability, with 96% of its customers happy to buy DrayTek again compared to an industry average of 83%. If you’re buying a router for business, it’s an obvious choice."

PCPro also wrote this of the Draytek

hi, My current desktop does have an ethernet port.

Here is the item i have purchased off eBay, if you can recommend a good Modem that will go with it i would appreciate it.

    Thanks

    I already have. :)

But you should be able to find a Vigor 120 modem cheaper than that on eBay if you're patient. One went (new) for less than £35 last week.

As to the Belkin N1 you've bought, the question, really, is whether you want to keep it or whether you want to reject it and have your money returned. It was listed and titled as a "Belkin N1 Wireless Modem Router" and if the seller has sent you the model that has no modem in it, eBay will side with you in any dispute.

Gigabit Ethernet ports are important to have, nowadays, in a router.

Hmm that was my thought, if you think it is a good Modem i may as well simply buy an additional modem as you suggested.

    Thanks for your advice.
