WHY? On my first week as well....

Hey,

First week of work, got off to a pretty good start so far, although there is a guy I dont particularly like (seems aggressive).

Anyways, was printing off a book this morning, about money, altho I guess it does have a semi religous undertone.

Well, me being me forgot about it and left it in the printer....for him to discover and parade it round the office like we have some whack job among us! Great!

I haven't admitted its me, due to the way he's read out abstracts already and made it out to be a crazy persons! I only got it because it was highly rate on amazon....i guess this will teach me for printing at work!!

Can't concentrate at work AT ALL now, just worried ill be 'outed' as some kind of weirdo!

The only thing that can make this day worse is if he is a user on this forum......argh!

He's put it back next to the printer, although he can see the printer from his desk....what would you do next?

What reaction did it get from other people when he started shouting about it? If no-one appeared to care and you are getting on quite well with the other people in the office, then I'd just wait for him to leave/go to lunch or get in early before him and just pick it up from where he's left it.

If anyone sees you picking it up just explain what it's about. I expect most people will be fine when they realise that whatever he was trying to convey isn't true, that you're not a crazy whack job and that you're not a religious fundamentalist that is going to try and convert eveyone.

If he's that obnoxious, I doubt you're the only one that feels that way about him. This might even give you the opportunity to get to know some of your other colleagues better by finding some common ground when you strike up a conversation with them about reading, what books they read, what other things they like doing outside of work or just your mutual dislike for this chap...

Leave it. DOn't go near it. We are not allowed to go on Ebay at work and I printed out a load of Ebay invoices for stuff I had sold so I could package them up that night. As I was doing it the phone rang and I got involved in a long phone call and forget about the invoices. Anyway the big manager picked these off the printer and gave the whole office a lecture about misuse of computers.

I agree, not the best start to a job by photocopying personal stuff and in company time too!

assuming you're not meant to do personal printing at work, I'd leave it! I'm guessing you'll probably be on some sort of probationary period at the moment if it's your first week and it wouldn't look too good if management found out you'd printed a whole book using their resources, I don't think what the other people in the office make of the book content is the main problem TBH.
If you desperately want it and want to risk it then try and scoop it up at the end of the day.

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

Dont think many people realise that this could be construed as gross misconduct and employees could be sacked on the spot.
theft of company time, paper, electricity etc. etc.

Can you imagine the implications afterwards, trying to get another job.

  • I've only just really thought about it - time for me to stop MSEing during the day too I guess!! Thanks for your help guys :)
  • Perhaps he knew it was you and just wanted to ram home the point (doing you something of a favour), that you were presumably on company time doing personal stuff - for which you could probably get the sack. Lesson learnt I should think.

Also remember that large firms with networked PC's know exactly which sites you're on and when.

Do you really want 'your card marked' so soon after starting this job - in the current financial/employment crisis?
