Suncream for babies

Morning all,

I have 14 week old twin boys and would like some advice on suncream. Factor 50 is recommended and we have tried Nivea. It is incredibly thick and not very easy to massage in, feels very sticky and leaves whiteish marks on their skin (like it hasn't sunk in). Also, if it gets on their clothes, it stains yellow.

Just wonder if all Factor 50 creams are thick and gloopy - can anyone recommend ones that aren't?

Thanks in advance!

I dont know if this is still the case but I was told previously not to use suncream on babies under 6 months, just keep them completely out of the sun.

Thanks for the reply. My health visitors seem to think being in the sun is ok with suncream on. (Obviously they aren't sunbathing, am just on about sightseeing and they are in the pram or when you take them out for a feed etc).

Yeah, I had to laugh when I was told (cant remember who or with which boy, they are nearly 6 years apart) beacause if you are out and about which naturally you are then yes you can have them covered, car seat hood, buggy hood parasol etc you will never stay completetly out of the sun all the time!!

Oh and I quite like Avon's suncream. Ive been using a spray on stuff for my 2, its a Pirates of the Caribbean tin but thats by the by. Seen it in Semichem, its quite a high factor as my boys are pale skinned and it goes on well and not gloopy or thick.

I believe this is still the case. Its not very practical when going out and about in our day to day lives.

I do use suncream (Soltan) on DD and I find it very thick and lives marks on fabric, but I feel this is a small price to pay for my daughters health.

  • I'm a very pale skinned blonde and I had superdrug own brand factor 50 in Mexico last year, comes in a spray bottle and rubs in quite well, it does still stain clothes yellow though. Avon suncream is also really good and there's always offers on it!

Have you looked into getting a shade a babe? Basically a black mesh UV shade thing that you attach to the pushchair with velcro. They are a bit pricey TBH, but they last really well - we used ours for DD and now DS (who's 5 months old), and I dare say it'll do several more children as it's held up really well. Haven't yet bought sun cream for him as we tend to stay out of the fierce sunshine at the moment (when we ever get any!!).

With DD (who's now nearly 5), we got hold of sun cream formulated for children over 6 months old - think it was by Tesco, but I'm sure there's loads of others about. Yes it was incredibly gloopy and stained everything it touched. Couldn't even wash it off my hands!

Honestly, I'm not sure what we're supposed to do ...stay in for the duration of the summer? My HV is very insistent about keeping DS out of the sun at all costs, but I think this is a situation where the advice has nothing to do with reality - I'm not talking about letting them 'sunbathe' or about taking few precautions on the beach, just about real life.

Hope you manage to find something suitable.

If you have other children you can't keep them locked in the house all summer though.

I used Johnson's baby suncream, the one at the bottom of this page, but I thought it was factor 50. Perhaps not. I bought the facial suncream - my son hates suncream on his face, and the facial one seemed a lit lighter, less irritating for his eyes.

  • In Australia I understand that they don't allow sun cream over factor 30 as the increase in value is not significant. I used a factor 30 cream of my very pale skin daughter and aimed to keep her in the shade as much as possible

I have always used tescos childrens sun cream for my son. I have a special face one from mothercare which is much thicker but the one from tescos is great. highly recommended :)
