New Car Thread

Feel free to move if this is in the wrong section

I am on the look out for a "new" car ( I need advice but really dont know what I want), please note it does not have to be new, I have a slight budget but it is very moveable for the right car. I travel roughly 400 miles a week so I think a diesel would suit me more than a petrol.

I want a big car but not stupid big, maybe a three door big, at present I have a 52 plate Renault clio (very small), it is very quickly dieing! I was thinking in the range of an Astra, would love a volvo C30 but heard the mpg is awful, has anyone got a car they love and swear by? would love to hear some comments on reliable cars!

Thanks

    Hello aaronoxf

Your thread is better suited to the 'Motoring, Public Transport & Cycling' board.

You are definately in diesel territory here.
For big miles and good comfort I would suggest finding a 110bhp or 130bhp Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi or a 2.0TDi. You can spend anywhere from under £3000 to getting towards £20,000 for a brand new one.
Something nearly new / up to a year old is a good age to take a car on IMO, if budget permits.

Thats some very useful advice, thank you, but im 24 and am thinking maybe a 1.9 is too much (insurance wise), I was originally thinking of Astra type, maybe a budget up to £9,000

Astra diesels with the 1.7cdti engine are sweet enough and run on fresh air.
3 year old ones can be got for under 5000...

Diesels are usually a bit less than petrols to insure and with turbo charged engines the capacity of the engine is less relevant anyway.
The 1.9 TDi is also available with a 90bhp power output which should be a bit easier again on insurance.
  • You may think it is to small !! but a Diesel 1-3 ecoflex Corsa may fit your needs and they are not as small as you think as they are larger than the old Corsa !!

    70 MPG

    £35 road tax

    Cheap Insurance

I do not know if it would be in your price range ???

I would advise not buying an Alfa Romeo

I don't want to put you off - but be VERY careful when buying a Vauxhall, I've found if I've had a problem i've been farted around so long until it was out of warranty then they found it had a million problems.
They're generally very unhelpful as a whole unless they're getting your money!
Stuff like driving my car for a week, on my petrol, then refusing to put any back in. Like I said, if I give them the car with a fiver petrol in what would they have done?!
!!!!ing about with courtesy cars, saying I cant have one even though my warranty did, because I didn't 'book' one, but even if I did book one, then I wasn't guaranteed one! :S
If they're all booked surely they know how many they'd have?!!!
When I had an engine management problem they basically called me a liar.

I really wouldn't go back to them!

Debt so far: Natwest Overdraft -
    [STRIKE]£1250[/STRIKE] £0, Barclays Overdraft - £1500
    , Abbey Overdraft -
    [STRIKE]£750[/STRIKE] £0, Car finance - £3000 :(

Thats some good advise, I must admit, I had a look at a corsa, but I dont know, its just theres something thats missing from the Corsa, it maybe because i like the astras a lot and im maybe a bit stuck up and just dont like the name, when you think of a corsa you think of a bloody common nasty car, but the newer ones are nice I have to admit
