Wisdom tooth pain but they won't remove them!!!

Options
Hi,

I've read a thread on here from someone who was having their wisdom teeth out and wondered if anyone had any useful advice for me?

Basically i'm off Uni today as i've had pain in my wisdom tooth, jaw, ear and headaches with pain running to the front of my teeth all weekend. I managed to get an emergency appointment today and the dentist said it's infected and gave me antibiotics, mouthwash and painkillers (£30 worth!!). This is the second time it's happened but the dentist said she can't refer me to the hospitol until it's been infected three times!! I obvioulsy don't want to go through having it infected again and knowing my luck it will happen whilst i'm sitting my final exams!

I'm insured by Bupa through my partners work and they have said i can have them out if they are 'buried' or 'impacted'.........would i need to see my dentist again and tell her this and would she then sign something so i can get it done by Bupa? I feel like poo at the moment but should i willingly put myself through a GA etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i also can't afford to keep going to the dentist, getting prescriptions etc!!!

Thanks

    Second time in how long?

It might make a difference if it's done on BUPA.

NHS criteria can be set by local hospitals, and this may be a local 'rule'

Wisdom teeth shouldn't be taken out if they are trouble free, and sometimes they can be situated close to a nerve, which makes it a risky proceedure taking it out, but it doesn't sound like either of these things apply to you.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Second time in three years and she did say Addenbrookes (local hospital) had very strict guidelines on removing wisdom teeth.

My lower teeth are already really overcrowded which has resulted in them being very crooked and i had thought about eventually seeing an orthodontist about Invisalin. Therefore as they are causing me pain i thought it might be easier to have them out now with Bupa (if possible?). Not sure who would deem them impacted or buried..........would this be my normal dentist or Bupa themselves?

Go back and have a word with your regular dentist. It will be him who does the referal.

    Any luck yet.

I work in hospital as well as practice ( formally known as pester on the group...but lost my login) and mainly take out wisdom teeth.

Firstly most hospital dont have such tight rules about 3 episodes.....

Secondly the waiting list at hospital will be quite some time.

Finish the antibiotics and ull feel better.

Get ure dentist to either take them out herself or if she cannot to get you referred privately. Most consultants will run a private list and hence ull be seen quick.

Most wisdom teeth if causing pain will be impacted so i dont think ull have a problem on that front. Even paying for them private may not be as expensive as you think..

GA..try to avoid. Most teeth can come out without GA. Its a lot more pleasent afterwards.

Let us know how you get on.

    Good Luck !

ps - Toothsmith how do u find time to be so active on the board.

    I have no life!

No - I have a laptop in my surgery, and often browse as my nurse turns the surgery round between patients.

I the evenings, I just 'pop' by from time to time!

  • Hi OP

Don't know where you live, but if it's London maybe try Guy's Dental Hospital at London Bridge. I don't have a dentist and haven't for many years (i know, I know ....) had real probs with a wisdom tooth, had one apppt with them (self referral as dental emergency) and scheduled in for removal under sedation 1 month later. No problems since....

I'm going through the same misery of problem wisdom teeth...
My nhs dentist referred me to the local hospital to see about getting the tooth/teeth removed. As I hadn't heard anything for a couple of weeks, I rang the hospital and was told there was a 13 week waiting list - just to initially see the Consultant. I was horrified! I asked if there were any sooner appointments, or cancellations, (anything, p-l-e-a-s-e). They came up with a slot on 14 September. I grabbed it!
Meanwhile, I was permanently doped up on anything and everything going. I pleaded with my Doctor to give me some strong painkilllers , as I couldn't stand it. I wasn't getting any sleep - it was agony. I'm sure you know what I mean. Anyway, he prescribed some Solpadol tablets. They are working a treat. Thank God. But roll-on Thursday, when I see the Consultant.

Just a little update on my above post.

Saw the Consultant this morning. A really nice chap.
Yes there's a wisdom tooth to pull out. Unfortunately, the quickest appointment on offer to me is for ... next March!
    Oh My Gawd!
Basically, I should keep popping the Solpadol pills till then. Wish me luck...
