Do I have to pay cancellation charges if I'm outside my contract?

Options
Hi there,
I'm with 3 for my phone and usually you have to give 30 days notice. However, my contract ended a couple months back and I've shopped around for a better deal with the phone I want. I spoke to 3 today, they couldn't beat the deal I was offered elsewhere (even though they spent over half an hour trying!!) Anyway, as I'm outside my contract do I still have to give 30 days notice i.e. pay an extra month's fees, as this is what I was told by 3. I thought it wouldn't apply to me as theoretically I have no contract with them???
Does someone know whether I have to or not??

Many thanks in advance :)

They are right. You can either give 30 days notice and leave at the end, or leave now and pay them in lieu of the notice.

All covered by the contract conditions. (You are in a contract with them until you cancel it)

You are not outside of your contract, you have just completed the minimum period. It is a common misconception.

Assuming you want to take the current number with you, you need to ask Three for a PAC which is valid for 30 days. Give this to the new provider.

... I may be mistaken, but my understanding is that although requesting the PAC is technically giving the 30 days notice, when you use it this ends the contract (as the number has switched) and charges end at that point (assuming that you are outside the minimum term)?

That is correct. It is just coincidence that a PAC is valid for 30 days, it is not necessarily giving 30 days notice :)

I had a feeling I was going to be told that - grumble grumble

Well I was told I can change my price plan down for the month and cancel it, so will pay £9 instead of £22 for the month. I will call them tomorrow and check that out.

    Cheers guys :T

I would not change your price plan. I have heard of many horror stories where customers have made slight changes to their accounts with 3 at the end of their contract only to find that the person at 3s( lack of )customer service has signed them up to a new contract.
