I would like to login to various people's pcs through broadband to check various things (with their permission of course)
Does PCAnywhere do this?
Anybody any experience of this and have recommendations?
Windows XP has a remote assistance option? Does this work with broadband and other OSs, or just XP.

what you need is ultra vnc http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/
its free and really easy to use.
You just install a client on the pc you want to control and a viewer on your pc.
or like you say you could use remote desktop but this will only work with xp and server 2003.0 -
pcanywhere is more robust for what you need
its more expensive than vnc, but its also more secure and functional.
where are you going to be when you make these connections? at your home? in the office? - if the latter then you'd probably have problems with your corporate firewalls!!!0 -
I use PCAnywhere on my home wireless network so I dont have to keep running upstairs to check on my video editing software. It works great and because I have a static IP I can access my computer from anywhere by just typing in my IP and entering the correct login/password.0

I'd go with UltraVNC as mentioned above, with the encryption. It's free and very good (won one of the top 3 yearly awards on Sourceforge). It can also work via a web browser (with java installed) if you don't have the client app handy.
Other than that Remote Desktop which is built into XP Pro is very good.
Definitely worth using either of the above two via SSH."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
https://www.Logmein.com
This came Highly recommended by the Gadget TV Show for it's FREE use and it's Security. 512Mb Encryption!
I would use this if I were you.
Hope that helps.0 -
That's a bit overkill isn't.maforduk wrote:512Mb Encryption!
(Note - only geeks like me who understand encryption strength will get that, to everyone else it will just look like I'm being an idiot

Isn't it 256-bit encryption via SSL? Only reference regarding encryption I could find."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0

I also commend Logmein.com for ease of use, security (especially if you use the one-time emailed access code) and price (free unless you want to do file transfers.
