More about voip from Martin Completely Free Calls Worldwide via your PC

    and in this thread
Voip phone - no need for a computerIt is very irritating that while the call charges are set out online the charges for credit and the expiry period for the credit isn't so clear. Well not on the sites I've checked.

Most of these VOIP services now require you to credit your account with £10, this then lasts for 120 days before it disappears! Given that most people sign up to these VOIP services to get free calls to various destinations it kind of refeats the object if your paying £10 for it anyway.
With such cheap calls available through the 'callchecker' it comes down to how much you call abroad. As someone suggested maybe use up the £10 credit with 0844/45 & 0870/71 numbers if you can't find an alternative.

I've just joined up with sipgate.co.uk, gives me a london number people can dial-in to and I can call other SIP (VOIP) numbers free.

I'm using a Speedtouch 716 ADSL router that was supplied by Be Internet, it lets you plug your phone in the back and operates as a voip adapter.

I've signed up with ipkall.com who have given my a USA number (Seattle) which forwards directly to my phone here in London. Also free.

sipbroker.com has a number of public access numbers around the world that people can use to call SIP numbers too.

But as far as I can tell all the VOIP providers are more expensive for making international calls that 18185!

If you want something simple to run on your PC, try the Gizmo Project (http://www.gizmoproject.com/) - free web-web calls free SIP in/out calls too. Much better than skype.

I've setup the VOIP on the 716 with 2 numbers on SIPGATE have you managed to get 2 different sip companies set up at the same time?

I've only used the web interface. not tried the telnet interface.

Noticed the 716 has dial plan support so if say you dialed a UK number it can automatically strip the lead 0 and add the 0044 dial code etc..

I used it to program the * to dial the 0800 access code for 1899 and registered my Sipgate number with 1899, as 0800 calls are free on Sipgate (!) this lets me dial out for 3p + 1p per minute fine for occational use and testing!

Is there much in the different VOIP providers? I noticed

http://www.voipcheap.com/en/index.html credit is only 90 days!

    http://www.voipcheap.co.uk/

The code for the dial plan I entered was

    voice dialplan add prefix=* defaultport=FXS1 fallbackport=FXS2 priority=NA fallback=enabled minimumdigits=1 maximumdigits=1 posofmodify=1 remnumdigits=1 insert=08081708708 rescan=no action=none

This simply means pressing * gets you the voice prompt at which poihnt you dial out.

This command automatically converts 6 digit UK numbers 87474747 into 00442087474747 useful for some of the SIP providers that need international formats.

    voice dialplan add prefix=2-8 defaultport=FXS1 fallbackport=FXS2 priority=NA fallback=enabled minimumdigits=6 maximumdigits=6 posofmodify=1 remnumdigits=6 insert=00441234 rescan=no action=none

For people who are interest the dialplan seems to work on the FXO port so calls out on the VOIP connection can be sent to the analog line, but there seems to be no way to tone dial on this with the 716 you seem to be dropped out on the dial tone!

Only had the modem a few days so all this VOIP stuff is new advise on good quality VOIP on hardware like the 716 is welcome!

I get my VOIP at home and work through a company called:

    www.voipstunt.com

You get so many free minutes and then it costs approx ten euros for 120 days. The quality is good as long as your not using the internet for hundreds of tasks whilst making a call. You can also get a free VOIP phone number so that you can receive phone calls direct to your PC.

I know it sure saves me a lot of money when calling the states.
Anyone used VOIPStunt with the Speedtouch 716?
To get a test account just sign up and add no credit it all works fine, calls capped at 60s

    1) Step on download the software and run it this creates an account. You canno create an account via the web site! Write down the info and uninstall the software.
    2) Now bang the details into the telephony config and advanced config on the 716 or your ATA. I set BOTH Voip lines to use the VOIPstunt account. I also dod not chose an incoming number.
3)It should connect if you have problems check the PC software is not trying to connect at the same time! Only one connection per account is allowed.
    4) the account should work WITHOUT credit mine did. I could make 2 outging calls at the same time on the 716 to 2 different numbers :)
5)I added the credit good for 120day 11.6 Euro use a nationwide visa card to get no loading.
6)I plugged one line from our PABX at home into the VOIP socket

Thanks for all the help and advice here! Now all the phone in the house ring when people call on the BT line, all outgoing call are routed via VOIPstunt. Will see how stable the setup is, I can still dial 82 on anyphone to go out over the BT (Orchid dialer) line as backup.

I set up a dial plan so I do not need to dial 0044+UK number I just dial UK with the lead zero and the dialplan strips the 0 and adds the 0044.

#Strip the lead 0 from a 11 digit uk number and make international for all 11 digit numbers starting 01 and 02

    voice dialplan add prefix=02 defaultport=FXS1 fallbackport=FXS2 priority=NA fallback=enabled minimumdigits=11 maximumdigits=11 posofmodify=1 remnumdigits=1 insert=0044 rescan=no action=none
    voice dialplan add prefix=01 defaultport=FXS1 fallbackport=FXS2 priority=NA fallback=enabled minimumdigits=11 maximumdigits=11 posofmodify=1 remnumdigits=1 insert=0044 rescan=no action=none

The Speedtouch 716 is supposed to have very good quality of service (where VOIP data are rushed through being given priority over other data) I've found the quality on Sipgate very good, but use 1899's 0808 numer to dial out 3p conneciton and 0.5p per minute. The SIP providers like VOIPStunt look much better.

Called NTL to disconnect on 01256 75 1045 using my shiny new VOIP stunt "line" and the lady asked why explained we have a new BE Broadband and was asked "is there anything that would make you stay with us" I explained no, she asked about the service, I said it was good no problems with the line, just the broad band options were slow and costly. She offered me 6 months free line rental and £5.65 credit for this month (I only pay half price as I wanted to disconnect 2 year ago and they lowered it I just call every 6 months or 1 year when the put the rates up, ask to disconnect and the the apply a credit and give more time on half price.

First time I've been offered free rental. This is due to the telewest merger so they will lunch new ADSL services within that timeframe.

Free line (I have to pay for calls except the free ones, I've used this line using the 1899 0808 free access number on a speed dial) so if my shiny new "Voip stunt line crashes and burns" I''ll be able to connect to use BT + Orchid as primary and NTL 1899 as secondary. Currenly "shiny" VOIPstunt is primary and BT+ Orchid is secondary on the PABX.

New to this voip stuff and have been reading a number of posts on here. I currently have two landlines, one for my business and one for personal. Im moving to the country and can only have a BT landline. I know from past experience that BT want to charge you business rates for second lines (not sure if that is still the same!) so I am now looking into making web to phone calls as my second line.

Sipgate seems good as they give you a regional landline number.

I will have broadband through BT probably (need to look into the best options there) and then I have a router to which I can attach 4 computers. Ideally want to be able to call in and out without having the PC on.

What do I need to go out and buy?
