Perfectly fine to plaster over tiles as long as the tiles are fixed securely

As for the finish, If the prep work is done correctly and thistle bond-it primer is used then you will achieve a perfect finish

That's something I have never heard suggested before!

We tiled over existing tiles in our last bathroom. Unfortunately our new tiles of choice, combined with the adhesive and grout, rendered it virtually impossible to turn on the bath taps without damaging our knuckles. Would never take a short cut like that again!

    That's so funny!

Thanks Andy. The workman has done work for a few people i know and he is really good, so i'm glad you agree you can do this. Think i'll just get it stripped back though, as my bathroom is small enough as it is.
  • you can actually plaster over tiles, it was done by a plasterer on a bathroom replacement contract i was working on a couple of years ago as opposed to stripping a full bathroom of tiles - the tiles had to be painted with a glue like primer that had sand in it to give a good key for the finish plaster

i cant recall the name of the primer but i think your right though to strip back and start from scratch

just wanted to share with you all :-)

PVA over the tiles with external grade PVA and the throw sand onto the PVA whilst still tacky, then plaster over the top ;)
  • Plenty of people tile over tiles once but anymore than that and it needs to be stripped back.

But why on earth would any real craftsman plaster over tiles? The fact that the room needs plastering means that you might as well take time and knock the tiles off and plaster the walls instead. It just sounds like a bodge to me. I wouldnt suffer it.

Far from a bodge, The primer is very good and has been tested for non porous surfaces

There are times such as the eggbox plasterboard walls where it is not practicle to remove the tiles as it generally brings the wall with it

In the OPs case,i'd tend to rip the tiles off and if the board was wet, rotted, finished,id reboard it with stuff suitable for bathrooms then tile and finish on top.
