JSA - what do you have to accept?

Hi all,

just wondering whether you have to accept any job when on JSA?

basically ive lost my business recently and am claiming job seekers whilst I find a job, however this is taking some time as I want to work somewhere decent. Ive got a great CV and career history which has taken years of effort to build up and basically Id rather be unemployed for longer and find somewhere I'm happy than get a job somewhere where I'm not.

are you technically allowed to do this or are they gonna force me to take something that i'm not happy with,

cheers,

Bman

    Wait for it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • You don't have to accept any job that comes along, as long as you are actively seeking work. If you have a career in a particular area you can search for jobs only within that area for the first *I think* 6 weeks. At that point you have another job focused interview and you have to broaden your search more. If you are offered a job and in the view of the jobcentre unreasonably refuse it your claim may be cancelled.

Well unfortunately in this day & age of shortage of decent jobs & too many applicants for each one, you are going to have to lower your sights if something suitable doesn't soon turn up.

If you can afford to support yourself from savings, just having your NI contributions credited then the pressure to be seen to put yourself out in an effort to secure paid employment might not be so great.

If you haven't got savings to live on or a partner with a decent income, have you thought how you are going to cope financially with jobseekers allowance?
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

A big gap in your CV will cause you more problems that taking a job you do not particularly like. If you are unemployed and reliant on benefits I do not see that you can afford to be picky.

i can cope on JSA - i dont need much to live on really so thats fine.

Im not so worried about a gap in my CV. many IT contractors take large periods of to retrain or go on holiday.

the question is, are the jobcentre accept this as feeasble?

i guess ill find out in half an hour when i go and ask them

For the first thirteen weeks you can limit your work options according to salary, field etc. After that time, you cannot be so selective. This will be explained at your thirteen week review. In order to continue claiming after this point, you will need to agree to these changes.
    Gone ... or have I?

I wouldn't worry about them forcing you into a job. You will soon find that there are very few jobs and millions of applicants - so the chance of you (or anyone else) getting a job anytime soon are pretty remote.
