My son who is more tecchie than me is obviously going on !!!!!! sites whilst i'm out, I notice when I go on after him the History window is open and when I look to see what he is has been viewing everything has been deleted and so has my recycle bin. Is there anything I can do to block these sites, preferablly for free as I have spent a fortune on spyware, which incidently I have been plagued with and have to do at least 2 full scans a day and it always picks up cookies, probablly the !!!!!! sites are to blame. Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

There's some info on the webpage below about diffierent ways of doing this and also some links to programs that are a bit more sophisticated.

Hope this helps,

If you're using xp set up user accounts, set youself as administrator (and give yourself a password he won't get) and you're son as a user and then set all his security settings in the web browser to high.
You can do this through control panel and user accounts.
If he's really good he'll get round this using proxy's but I'm sure someone else can help a bit more on this.
HTH
you can also get software (often free on magazines that will let you take a record of what the computer has been doing, I'm sure I've got something that takes snapshots of the computer screen ever so often. I'll have a look for it)0 -
My old post about index.dat
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=1643997&postcount=11
You could navigate to the folder and then tell him you know what sites he's deleted - give some examples from the index.dat list as proof
But don't tell instal super winspy or mention index.dat - If he knows how you did it he'd just google to find out how to delete them
Tell him you have magic powers0 -
There is a lot of software that can restrict sites that are being viewed.
When we came accross this with the teenage boy, I approached the problem differently. I figured that he was going to try to look at these sites anyway, so I bookmarked a couple of 'safe' pornsites (ones I knew didn't contain viruses or spyware). I pointed them out to the boy, and told him if he wanted to look at that kind of thing, could he use the sites I'd saved. I knew at least the computer would stay save.
This approach worked for us.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

As a side note, you don't need to pay for good anti-spyware protection.
Have a look at the thread at the top of this forum
There are lots of good free anti-spyware programs.- = I also recognise the Robins and beep for them = -0 -
My suggestion is that you talk to him about the sites he is visiting and why.
If he has the nouse to clear the history & recycle bin, he probably has the skill to get around a lot of security tricks - as you say, he is more tecchie than you
If you don't know the sites he been visiting, you don't know what problem you're dealing with. Is it !!!!!!? Is it gambling? Is it drugs? Is it the gay scene?
Of course, they may not be problem sites at all, in which case you could be guilty of sentencing him for a crime he hasn't committed .... communication is the key here. Simply dealing with the (presumed) symptoms doesn't address the real problem - if there is one.

I know its intrusive but Ive been known in the past to use a keylogger, easily downloadable free of charge, this will log every keystroke someone makes on your PC.
I personally used it because I was worried what some of my little girls more errrm wordly friends were discussing on MSN, Ive since sat her down and had a chat with her and made it quite clear that if I ever find anything in-appropraite on the PC she will be banned for life.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
in my option this bit hard problem as young kids of today know how to use computer alot better than parents i mean you could set parent controlls there are also lots of software u can buy like http://www.netnanny.com/ http://www.cybersitter.com/ but then again u dont want to pay i would surgest sitting him down and asking him and explain that other people like you se the computer u do not want that sort thing on there and maybe say u are trusting him on the computer if it carrys on u will ban him from using it or set up net nanny so he can only view certain sitesHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I'm sure that there is an option on Windows XP.
Look at Tools, Internet Options and in there you will find somewhere to enter a password for restricted sites.
Also, it's get an Internet Firewall, there are options on here to that you can use as the Administrator to block unwanted content.
As the Admin, you have complete control.0 -
Why not move the computer to a family area where it is more likely someone will be around, rather than a spare room?0
