Easy cure, don't sell to people with private plates, then you will not have to work so hard.:rolleyes:0 -

HI EVERYONE, I HAVE JUST COME BACK FROM THE DVLA WITH GRIME NEWS AND WAS WONDERING IF THERE WAS ANYTHING I COULD DO? BASICALLY I AM IN SO MUCH DEBT SINCE MY EX LEFT 2 YEARS AGO. HE LEFT JUST AFTER HIS 40TH BIRTHDAY, (MID-LIFE CRISIS!!!); AND THIS WAS JUST AFTER I FORKED OUT FOR A PERSONALISED NUMBER PLATE I BOUGHT HIM COSTING £800, (FEELING VERY STUPID NOW!!!) I AM IN ARREARS WITH MY MORTGAGE AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH OTHER DEBTS SO I THOUGHT ONE OF MY GET OUT CLAUSES WOULD BE TO SELL THE PLATE, HENCE GOING TO THE DVLA. BUT THEY HAVE JUST TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE THE NUMBER PLATE WAS NEVER REGISTERED TO A CAR AND THE TIME HAS ELAPSED (2 YRS), THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO REDEEM ANY COSTS I SPENT IN BUYING THE PLATE, AND FURTHERMORE IT IS REDUNDANT. BECAUSE I AM IN SO MUCH DEBT I HAVE JUST GOOGLED AND FOUND THIS FABULOUS FORUM, AND I DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE WORD OF ONE SCHOOL LEAVER AT THE DVLA, AS TO WHETHER THE PLATE IS TRUELY REDUNDANT. PLEASE CAN I PICK THE BRAINS OF ALL YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE AS TO WHAT I CAN DO, AS IT SEEMS ALL SUCH A WASTE, AND I NEED TO VENT!!!!!!!  THANKS FOR READING THIS, I WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL FOR ANY INFO AS I AM STILL MUCH IN THE DARK.
BEST WISHES AND THANKS FOR LETTING ME GET THAT OFF MY CHEST

AFAIK. if you did not pay the extra to renew the plate(DVLA do send reminders out) you lose the rights to it and it goes back to DVLA and all monies are lost. Please feel free to shoot me down if im wrong. Am thinking of a new one:beer:0

Generally you do lose the rights to the plate if it is not renewed.
All I can suggest (I am ex-DVLA) is that you write to DVLA explaining the situation AND enclose the payment for the missing years. If they accept yuor explanation then the plate will be renewed and you could then potentially sell it on privately.
DVLA do not buy back the plates so you would have to find a company or individual who would buy it from you, so I strongly suggest you look into what price you can get for it before you go through with appealing to DVLA and renewing. If you can only get £100 for it then is it really worth the cost and hassle?
Quite a lot of the companies that sell them on do so on a basis where they advertise it for you and you only get paid (minus their costs) once they sell plate for you. My neighbour has had hers registered for sale with company for 2 years and no interest so far.

Not hassle free for us dealers though!0 -
