What to do with private number plate?

Hi

This is my 2nd question this evening, I don't normally post in motoring cos I consider it man's stuff! :D

I bought myself a plate from the dvla with my initials on and I want to keep it when I change my car.

Any ideas on what I do with my current car as it were as I know I can't sell it without a number plate!?

Thanks folks!

  • two ways really

buy a new car, transfer it from one to the other

or transfer it to retention, sell car, buy new car and then put it on new car

dvla site explains this as do the reg sales sites

ps, wait for abuse from the usual people!

I always find it is easiest to put it on retention when I am thinking about changing car, as it gives you one less thing to have to think about when changing cars.

  • If you part exchange your car in to a dealer all you need to do is let them take care of the transfer. It'll cost you the £80 transfer fee and may delay the sale date, but when I change cars they usually have it done within two weeks and it's hassle free.

theres a lot of private plate haters on here

retention is basically putting your numberplate on a bit of paper rather than a car!
  • My father can't stand private plates either, in fact, I bought it deliberately to wind him up!

He also can't stand Freelanders, I can't figure out why he then went and bl**dy bought one!

    2)What exactly is retention?
    1) Some folks don't like folks who have personalised plates - just like some don't like cheese. ;)
    2) You pay DVLA £25 and they allow you to keep ownership of the number - but not on a car. The car you own gets another number, usually it's original one and you can transfer the personal plate to your new car after you've bought it.

As has been said if you buy through a dealer they will do the transfer*, subject to you paying the fees. If you buy privately better going for a retention cert.

    * Car salesmen often don't like private plates as they often have to spend a few hours at the local DVLO because of it. I find that quite amusing.:D

Retention intially costs £105, then £25 per year after the first year. this includes the fee to transfer it onto a vehicle in the future (£80)
