I got the letter detailing the newest charge today, it's saying it's because of a Morrisons card payment. Now, i used my card in there a few days ago and the money was debited straight from my account, although it didn't show up on my statement straight away which i know is normal.

BUT, surely they can't take the charges out AFTER my shopping had been debited from my available balance, which did take me overdrawn, and blame the shopping, when i know my balance was fine before they took the charges??

And alas, no one has called me Re the complaint so i will have to chase them up on it tomorrow.

Oh and the letter today does not say when it will be debited either, it says within xx time of your next statement, i forget the exact wording as i don't have it with me, but it should have a date, IMO.

I didn't get paid when i was supposed to (1st June) and as a result i had 2 direct debits bounce. I rang the bank straight away asking if i was going to be charged, they said yes, 2 x £8 fees.

Did you go to your employer and ask them to pay for these charges ? If they didn't pay you when they should have done and you incurred bank charges as a result then I'd expect your employer to pay them.

Hi, it was DWP who were meant to pay me, JSA. They said they could look into it if i sent my statement to them, however my statement is saying the charges refer to 19th June/20th July and i have no idea why, so i'm worried it won't be looked at, and therefore not refunded.

It sounds like you were charged a Guaranteed Transaction Fee. Even though you had the money in your account when you went to Morrison's, this transaction when it went on to your statement, after the charges, took you further overdrawn/over your overdraft limit.

The date you will be charged is on your next statement.

Hi yes i was. But i still can't understand it

For example, on a £400 limit,

    9th Aug - Balance -£389

    10th Aug - spend £10 in Morrisons

10th Aug - balance now showing as -£399 due to Morrisons (not showing on itemised statement yet)

    11th Aug - Bank charges go out £16 - Balance -£415

11th Aug - Morrisons now showing on statement

(this isn't precisely what happened, but near enough)

I see your point, and i can sort of see their logic, but they took their charges last, it shouldn't matter what shows on the itemised statement, as the Morrisons money was spent and debited first! So the GTF should be for the charges, not the shopping. It's a bloody scam :(

Also, i didn't get a statement from 1st June til now (still haven't) so not sure why they've taken the fees already if they're saying it doesn't go out until i receive the next statement.

You need to ring Telephone Banking and find out when the last statement was sent out, maybe it's got lost in the post?

Thanks, i'll be ringing them tomorrow anyway to chase up the complaint.

The only redeeming factor in this is that i can still use the 0800 number that claims to be "closing down soon so please ring 0845" it's been saying that for months & months :rotfl:

I don't understand why you didn't simply leave a minimum balance of £16 in your account, knowing that these fees were going to come out sooner or later.

People seem to think overdrafts are a godgiven right and an extension of their money. They are not. They are meant to be an emergency facility to be used short-term, but so often we see posts about people regularly living to their overdraft limit, and then squealing with outrage when the limit is breached.

An overdraft is agreed. If you keep using it as a cash reserve, and then go over it, there is noone to blame but yourself.

As a Barclays shareholder, I applaud their decision to charge £8 everytime someone borrows money from my company without asking.

Sort your finances out. Get rid of your overdraft. And then you won't be so outraged that the bank was simply doing its job on behalf of its shareholders, staff and fellow customers who DON'T live on credit they didnt ask for.
