Cheap/free email to my sms

Hiya

We're looking for a cheap or preferably free way to know if we have emails sent to a certain account (which can be changed/forwarded) wherever we are.

Both O2 and Virgin Mobile offered free email addresses which sent a sms text when an email was received, but the former now charges and the latter pulled the service.

Does anyone have any ideas of any systems that don't want a fortune; the content of the email is not important, just the fact that one is there as it is time critical?

Thanks in advance.

Yahoo! offer a service, but it ain't cheap either IIRC.

EDIT: Perhaps o2 on a free online P&G sim with 1Mb free GPRS when you top up £10p/m may be best (check a mail account over wap)?
Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!

Only FREE and no hassle way is Orange, though its hard to set up.

Now they have even improved this service. You must have an Orange Sim (PayG / Contract). Then go to http://www.orange.co.uk/emailandorganise and register FREE email account using your mobile number.

Then switch on email alerts (You can do on ALL or filtered emails)

all emails to yourname@orange.net will be sent as sms slert to your mobile.

How to get alert on other email accounts?
If you have another email account you can setup forwarding to your orange account. e.g. in gmail setup forwarder to your orange email account.

I cant go in details of each step but if you are stuck anywhere just lemme know.

    Hope that helps

Many thanks guys, guess the only other question is whether I need to top up the orange PAYG regularly?

AFAIK, get a FREE orange sim. Top up £5 and your sim will remain active for 6 months (I was told by CS).

And as you will be recieving text/email alerts your SIM will remain active.
And you can occasionaly call 123 (charged) to get the system read your email.

So its £10 / Year (Which you can use for other services)

I have an OVP to virgin postpay, which is no line rental/no expiry. Not sure if they still do them?

Yes! as long as you have an Orange active number and are able to receive the confirmation code via text. You can register and get email alerts FREE. :)

How much doest it cost per alert?
I will tell you how much I would be paying if I use that instead of Orange alerts. :)
